NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

Hi, I purchased a LINKSYS wireless router recently, all was working fine till I disconnected the eternet cable from the modem and added a ethernet splitter in an attempt to split the output from the modem to the PC directly and also the router (so that I could use secure remote from the pC directly; it doesn't work through a router!) Anyway it would not work, I could not access the internet. I then removed the splitter and plugged the ethernet cable back in the original configuration through the router which had worked a few minutes before. You've guessed it did not work. I tried various things, checked the broadband modem worked without the router, reinstalled the router software - the ethernet light was not coming on the broadband modem when connected to the router and the internet light would not come on the router. I took the router back to the shop got a replacement and it was the same. I changed to a Belkin and have the same issue.

Does anyone know if the broadband modem has perhaps been upset by my changes - when plugged though the ethernet and the router it seems that the USB light first comes on then goes off, could the modem be trying to use USB? Finally I reinstalled the broadband software but to no avail.

Any help is appreciated even if it is a recommendation to buy another cable modem.

Thanks

Willie

Willie.

A couple of things for starters -
1. Have you been power cycling the cable modem through these problems? any time you change the connected device it needs to be tunred off for 30 secs.

2. Does the PC work directly connected to the CM still (after rebooting the CM!)?

Re: NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

Hi, Yes the cable modem has been powered down and then left for 30 seconds before powered up, then I awaited the lights stopping flashing,

Secondly, the cable modem will always work when directly connected to the PC and still does.

Thanks

Willie

Re: NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

With the PC plugged in to the router and the router plugged in to the CM, can you browse to CM web interface? :
http://192.168.100.1/
What does the router report as it's WAN address? Does the Belkin have a diagnostics page that allows you to do ping/tracert tests?

Eh? You split the Ethernet cable into 2 devices? This isnt going to work...

Thanks

Re: NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

If you can get to both the router and the CM from your PC, and the router is showing a valid NTL IP address, eg 80.x.x.x, there shouldn't be a problem.

Is there no traffic getting out? The usual test's are

Tracert www.bbc.co.uk

and

telnet www.bbc.co.uk 80

from the Dos prompt.

Does 'can't access the internet' mean just browsing or everything?

Re: NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

Wait a moment, i think the problem here is with the Ethernet wiring. Ok, can you answer me this question. When you have the router connected, do you have it plugged into the modem with 1 cable, nothing else connected, split, etc or not? You only have 1 IP address (normally), you cannot just split the ethernet connection to 2 devices. Its a digital signal, you cannot just split it. I apologise if i have mis-understood you, but if this is the way you have it set up, its not going to work.

Re: NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

Ok. So you have the router connected to the WAN / Internet port on the router with a Working, Non-X Over Ethernet Cable ?

Re: NTL Home Cable modem not recognising router

Yes the cable modem is connected with ethernet cable to the router internet port and another ethernet cable from the network port on the router to the PC ethernet card. The cable modem ethernet light does not even flicker, however the USB light flickers then goes off.
