Virgin Media make their Terms and Conditions 'Phorm' Friendly

ISPReview.co.uk has pointed out that Virgin Media has recently altered its Terms and Conditions and it would appear that the company has made them rather Phorm friendly. Virgin Media is yet to declare whether it is to adopt to the usage of Phorm, a targeted ad service based on users browsing habits, or to abandon the agreement with Phorm altogether.

The Guardian, reports that city sources are claiming BSkyB has set its eyes on Virgin Media owned channels such as; Bravo, Challenge and Living by considering a £600 Million bid. Sky is said to be also interested in channels under the UKTV brand of which Virgin Media owns a 50% stake, the other half owned by BBC Worldwide.

Quite by accident, it would seem that my name has become synonymous with the debate over Phorm. When I initially started my own research into Phorm several months ago, it was for the purpose of evaluation based on my interests and academic work on the subject of privacy. As an undergraduate student I have spent the majority of my time writing about issues such as Privacy in the 21st Century and Biometric Fingerprinting of School Children; so it is no surprise that I would find the Phorm debate to be relevant to my studies.

In addition to continuing to show contempt for customers’ privacy via their rapidly backfiring Phorm deal, Virgin Media recently outlined their plan to trample on customers’ civil liberties with their 3 strikes-and-you’re-out download policy. However, this policy also recently backfired in spectacular style with the unprecedented rejection of such an idea by the European Parliament.

As reported earlier in the week, Virgin Media are to trial new measures regarding Traffic Management for their Broadband customers. The new measures will be trialed within the following regions; Preston, Wigan, Blackpool, Camden, Dalston, Enfield and Haringey.

Virgin Media are set to increase prices on some of its products by June 1st 2008. Customers on the XL TV package, will have to fork out an extra £1.50 more per month. TV Choice on demand will increase by £2 per month (Still Free for XL package) and daytime calls to other UK landlines they’ll cost 4p a minute, instead of 3.25p a minute. For customers on paper-based billing and taking bundles, this will increase by £1.

Virgin Media looks set to become the first British ISP to crack down on customers who download music and other pirated material, illegally. For some time now, record labels have been lobbying for a “three strikes-and-out” regime that would see persistent offenders kicked off their ISP for downloading pirated music files. BPI, which is a music trade body, is said to be working with Virgin Media on a pilot scheme, which could see customers sent warning letters.
