Drivers for NTL 250 Modem
Hi
Can anyone help?, I have a system running windows 98 and have broadband with an NTL 250 modem. System had viruses, re-installed windows 98, removed viruses etc. Tried re-installing NTL connection, half way through the process it reports an error that the installation program cannot determine my DHCP settings.
The PC sees the modem when the USB cable is plugged in but does the modem have to be installed first before setting up the connection?, I'm sure it does however when i try to find a driver on NTL installation CD it reports that there isn't one. Where can a get a driver for this modem?
Thanks

Re: Drivers for NTL 250 Modem
The driver is on the ntl cd- in the folder drivers/ambit/
however, win98 can be a bit funny about installing it.
Best thing to do, is remove the item from device manager, then go explore the ntl cd to /drivers/ambit/unistall.exe and run the file. Then reboot, plug the modem in, and chose the option to find drivers in a specific location- pointing to the path x:/drivers/ambit/ where X is your CD drive.

Re: Drivers for NTL 250 Modem
I've got same modem, but using it with XP, you do need to use the set up cd first, before connecting the modem, at least on XP, sotry again, first going to add/remove programmes and delete broadjump client foundation.
Then go to start, run, type in regedit, then go to edit, down to find, type in NTL in Find What, then after it finds entries, right mouse click each and every one and delete, keep doing this untill it finds no more.
Now try again, installing modem using setup cd, and follow on screen prompts.
Good luck.

As for 'Ebuyer' that is the worst company to purchase parts from.

Handyman is highlighting the fact that for £2.50 you can get yourself an ethernet card and connect to the internet by ethernet, not USB, far more reliable and less resource intensive on your PC.

Handyman posted an idea for you to pursue - which would help you no end. And not everyone has problems with Ebuyer.

Seconded, why use USB, when it's less stable, nicks too much resources, when Ethernet is a way better option and it costs so little to install a PCI?
USB pretends to be Ethernet and doesn't do a particularly good job of it.
Why get a dog that pretends to be a cat, when you can get a cat?

Re: Drivers for NTL 250 Modem
The problem is with the NTL software CD, drivers on the CD, NTL modem won't accept them although they are the correct ones. USB and Ethernet ports work fine, Why change them?????? It is a software fault not hardware......which is why i am asking for drivers!

If you have a ethernet port already, just reboot your modem and plug it into your PC.

Ethernet doesnt use drivers so dont put the ntl broadjump cd within a mile radius of the PC, it will work fine - my ntl cd is gathering dust still in its original packedging.

Re: Drivers for NTL 250 Modem
Sorry my post may have come across as a bit sarcastic but I have worked for technical support for ntl which has modems that support usb and ethernet and also for freeserve/wanadoo which has modems that only support usb.
In my opinion based on years of supporting these modems and years of actually usings them the costs involved in using ethernet are negligable compared to the stability and ease that it presents.
On ethernet if you change your computer you can simply unplug the cable modem for a few seconds whilst you pop in the ethernet cable to the new pc. 10 seconds later the modem has sensed the new mac address (of the ethernet card) and assigns your ip to the computer.
Usb on the other hand brings with it:-
modem driver issues
chipset driver issues
power management issues
conflicts
os incompatibilty with drivers
and worst of all you cannot add a router switch or hub to create a network.
So to summerise :
usb = not good
ethernet = very good
ebuyer = many many ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£ÃƒÆ ’‚£ spent no problems

Handyman I totally agree with you on the usb section. I still get questions at work if a router would work on the users usb modem.
why are isp's so "stingy" in giving a product that will only give people headache ??
Chiptech just follow Handyman's advice and dont bother with usb it'll drive you mad and even installing a NIC card on 98 is pure vanila (99% of the time) also sorry for sounding a bit nasty earlier on with my post bout the link to the new computer, my person and work experience with 98se is like this...its stable and works most of the time but last time I connected my NTL modem via USB I had nothing more then the Blue's of Death continually so I would for sure say if you got an Ethernet Nic on your pc use that instead. also been trying to look for my drivers for the NTL 250 but cant find them. sorry bout that

Re: Drivers for NTL 250 Modem
Why are isps stingy? Maybe they dont have the buying power ntl have. Ntl get their usb/nic modems for £10 ea.
