Football in financial turmoil

I know that this new comment should be in the SPORTS section, but l read an interesting article by Stan Collymore in one of today's nationals papers, concerning the major financial problems at Pompey.

It has been announced that there financial plight is bigger than has been revealed, and it is almost certain that the players won't get any bonuses for the cup final achievement, and any money they make, this will be used to pay debtors, and they won't go into Europe, as they didn't have to money to get the licence needed to get into Europe. The FA and PL should have acted much quicker, when they knew that there was a club in trouble, the PL is supposed to be the richest League in the world, so how the hell did Pompey get into this mess, the Directors of the clubs are a disgrace to have allowed such a great club like this to get into such a state. What should have happened, Pompey should have been expelled from Cup competitions, and told IF you cannot pay any debts, then you cannot play football until such time as finances allow, players had to wait for wages, And now there is a report that faxes have been sent to all PL clubs, saying that ALL the clubs players are up for sale, what a disgrace.

I look at the fuller picture, the Chairman and Directors control how a club is run, we have up and down the country clubs that are in financial problems, we have players that don't get paid, as they love the game, BUT clubs have a responsibilty to the personnel they employ, the big problem we have with Pompey, they were hoping that some poor bugger would help them out, the PL allowed them to sell players OUTSIDE, the transfer date, we have Spurs gave them Â£1.million quid as an advance payment to ease there financial problem, and a player renegades on the deal, IF Pompey is run as a business, they have to think of the people that they will ruin, if they don't get paid.

Having said that any organisation that steals cancer charity money is worthy of derision.

I wonder why people who have got fat and rich out of the club don't stick their hands in their pockets and help some of the deserving cases. Yes that includes a certain twitchy man currently employed in a managerial role in North London.

PS who would play in the cup final if Portsmouth were expelled Arthur?...

This is the problem with football, it's run as a business now. The the majority of owners it's not about the football, it's about the profit they make.

Pompey Football team has gotten to the final completely on their own merits.They are NOT responsible for all the thieving hands that have been in the till.Collymore is a plank.

Take a closer look at the so called owners who did BA but add their own debts to the pot for the treatment of the debtors.Also look to them for all those who have been made redundant..

Pompey fans have been lied to over and over about this situation..and they and the city and surrounding towns have lost out.

Who will it be next season, who goes bust. The decision on who would play at Wembley if Pompey were expelled would be down the the FA.

Its like West Ham at the moment, they are in financial trouble, and Sullivan and Gold have come into save them, BUT already they have stated that the club is in a mess, THIS is what l am referring to, years ago you never heard of clubs in trouble like they are now, it was run as a club, NOW it is run on the basis of how much the owner will make.

Pomey beat spurs in the semi, spurs were beaten fair and square.

but as a spurs fan I would want to see spurs reach a final this way.

Blame Rupert Murdoch who threw so much money at sport so that he could get a monopoly over sports TV.

You have to feel sorry for the Pompey fans who have followed there team through the ridiculous ups and downs of the past several months. It just seems that any spiv with a story has been able to worm his way in with promises of untold riches!
There are probably a few clubs that would find themselves in dire straits if they where to fall out of the premiership, even with the parachute payments and this surely cannot be a good thing. The trouble is, the cash-cow that is the premier league is still producing plenty of milk for those in the right positions.
All these American `investors` aren`t in it for the love of the game, they only wan`t to line their pockets!

Didn't Accrington Stanley and Bournemouth both go out of business? This has been going on for quite some time and, even though it's a shame for Pompeys fans that they're the poor buggers who have to put up with it, it's about time that a Premier League team came close to the brink to make the Premier League hierarchy actually give a monkeys...

Indeed, and you can bet that as soon as Sky start to lose money on it, they'll leave the sport, which by that time may not be able to survive on it's own.

I hate to say it, but Arthur is right. Football is in a state in this country. The top clubs are paying hundreds of thousands to each player each week. They seem to be financing this in three ways: From Sky, from Billionaire owners and from club merchandising/ticket sales.

You can bet that if the first goes, so will the second (in a lot of cases). This leaves the supporters having to pay costs that will amount to several Â£ million each week, together with whatever the media pays (which, you can bet will be a lot less if Sky isn't involved).

I can give you a prime example of how bad football finance is, Take a look at Blue Square League, this was covered by Setanta.

I watched some good games, and some of those players were good enough to play for a PL or CL club, but when they went bust, would Sky or ESPN cover these games, definately not, WHY, the games would not be watched by anyone, therefore Sky or ESPN won't cover them.

Then you have big clubs ie Chelsea pay ONE player Â£120.00 PER WEEK, you imagine how much would it would cost to cover 22 players, a staggering amount, football is sheer greed, and that is why some clubs WILL go under.
