More Cable/Wireless Help Needed

Hi there - I've searched the threads but can't find an answer!

I've recently had Virgin Media cable broadband installed. I'm wanting to go wireless so purchased a D-Link router.

I currently have two laptops (2 different owners) wanting to use the wireless system.

Both laptops connect to the internet when wired. We have installed the router and a connection appears, however no page will load. Ever.

Is there something we're missing?

TIA

When you say the laptops connect to the internet when wired, is that direct (one connected only at a time) to the modem, or is that wired via the router, so it's just the wireless that is the problem? Make sure you are powering the modem off and on whenever you swap what is directly connected to it.

Have the laptops been preused on any other internet? If so make sure that the network card is set to get an auto IP and autodetect the DNS. Similarly make sure the connection settings in Internet Explorer options are also set to auto.

You'll probably need to enable the wireless on the laptop, and configure the wireless on the router too. Put one laptop into wireless mode, (unplug the ethernet, reboot it), with the other wired, and browse the router's admin pages to configure it, checking that the wireless lappy can then connect.

Lastly check what firewalls and stuff are doing and that your lappys have current drivers.

Never liked D-Link, it might be worth dropping them a call.

run ipconfig from the command prompt and see if your getting an ip address.

Re: More Cable/Wireless Help Needed

Thanks for your responses -

OK - yes the laptops connect to the internet when wired directly and only one connected at a time. We do power the modem on and off whenever we swap laptops.

The laptops have been preused on other internet - auto IP and autodetect are checked. Will check the IE options.

Re: More Cable/Wireless Help Needed

In which case the next step is to see if you can get them to connect to the router and the router to the modem, all wired, before you try and go wireless - work it through in stages.

You have got a cable compatible router, not one with an ADSL inbuilt modem?
