Virgin/Tivo will have been working on a new box not long after the first VM Tivo was released here and the Premier was released in the USA; companies always plan a few years ahead for the next model especially in the consumer electronics industry.

It was not a bad move; Tivo has, by far, the best functionality of any PVR of that generation. It was not the fastest, but I'll take functionality over speed anytime. It was fast enough for me, though granted this software update seems to have slowed it down a bit; still very useable for me though. I assume that they are working on a fix for that.
The increased use of OTT services has now made this Tivo pretty much passed it's sell by date. Which is why a new generation of PVRS has started to appear; Sky Q for Sky and the new Tivo for VM.
I really don't get what your issue is; Maybe you would like Virgin to release a new PVR every year? Just be prepared to pay the increased cost if you do. Or, you could just move to another provider.

I agree with you that the TiVo was not a bad move. However, I do think there was a lack of foresight in that it was always intended the a range of apps would be available on it (remember Cindy Rose?). But the box wasn't up to it, which is why there are not more apps on it now and probably explains why it is so slow.
Hopefully the next one will be futureproof and has sufficient ooomph to do the job.

Some people find it too complicated to operate, but to be honest I like the functionality of the TiVo. The problem is that the existing boxes don't have sufficient power to do the job.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3
I was a big fan of the TiVo back when it first arrived. TiVo continued to innovate. Virgin stuck with the same box for too long.
No one is suggesting they should swap all the boxes every year, or even few years, but look how many Suerhubs there have been since the TiVo came out and people had a chance to upgrade if they wanted.
At the time of my earlier post I was just saying that after many years the time was now right. Some here argued there was absolutely no need to even think about replacing and that the box was quite snappy enough and capable enough. 6 months later the Sky Q was announced.
Now Virgin are a year behind releasing their 'equivalent' and while, it's true, we don't know all it can do yet, the little we do know - faster, yes, but basically the same UI and 6/7 tuners - it does not sound like it's even a reasonable competitor, let alone a leap-frogging move ahead. But I guess we will see.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3
My TiVo seems to have a strange glitch, just finding out if anyone else has experienced it:
While it is in standby, every so often the hard drive spins up, which is normal. I guess it's waking up for a recording or network check.
However, when the hard drive spins up I get what can only be described as a 'warble' from the speakers for a second or two, even though the TV is in Standby too.
I first noticed this a long time ago when the old TiVo was in the Living room and just put it down to my out of the ordinary set up (HDMI splitter, Cat6 HDMI extension and using an amp). Now that this TiVo is upstairs and connected the normal way, it still happens.
Is it on its way out? Or has anyone else noticed this?
Thanks

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3
I suspect a software fault rather than something wrong with your box. See if your TV has an option to disable CEC. (The manufacturer may call it something else. See this page for other names it might be called, but don't follow the advice to enable it)
