Diamond Harry will try to put a bad last campaign behind him when he lines up for the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday.

Paul Nicholls admits it is difficult to gauge how forward Silviniaco Conti is ahead of his return to action in the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

John Gosden's The Fugue endured a torrid passage up the home straight before settling for third behind Zagora in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

William Buick opted to stick to the rail on favourite The Fugue, but had nowhere to go as Zagora swept past to challenge leader Marketing Mix.

Chad Brown's Zagora (9-1) found plenty in the final furlong for Javier Castellano, coming home clear of Marketing Mix, while French raider Ridasiyna took fourth.

Flotilla finished with a flourish to give trainer Mikel Delzangles and jockey Christophe Lemaire their first Breeders' Cup wins in the Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita.

In what turned out to be a messy race for those near the rail, including Richard Hannon's Sky Lantern, who never found a gap under Richard Hughes, Flotilla was masterfully handled by Lemaire.

Excelebration bids to supplement his impressive Ascot success just two weeks ago in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita today.

The four-year-old put up arguably a career-best performance when winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Aidan O'Brien hopes those exertions have not left their mark.

"It was always the plan to come on to the Breeders' Cup after Ascot. I suppose there is always the chance two Group One races in two weeks is asking too much of the horse, but he seems in very good form," said the Ballydoyle handler.

Silviniaco Conti graduated to full company in style as he ran out a wide-margin winner of the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

A Grade Two novice winner at Aintree at the end of last term, the Paul Nicholls-trained runner was sent off the 11-10 favourite against five more experienced rivals and Ruby Walsh gave him plenty of time to find his feet.

Walsh delivered his challenge approaching the second-last and he accelerated clear to claim an 11-length verdict.

FORT SHOWS STEEL IN CLASSIC

Fort Larned made all of the running to win the Breeders´ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

The Ian Wilkes-trained four-year-old showed laudable steel under birthday boy Brian Hernandez to deny Mucho Macho Man in a pulse-chasing finish.

Mucho Macho Man seemed destined to win as he chased down Fort Larned along the straight, but Wilkes' colt would simply not be denied. Flat Out finished some distance away in third, but last year's runner-up Game On Dude was very disappointing after having made a sloppy start.

GUTSY MIKE CAUSES TURF SHOCK

St Nicholas Abbey was an honourable third behind Little Mike in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

Ballydoyle's five-year-old revelled on his return to fast ground, but could not match his heroics of 12 months ago.

Joseph O'Brien's partner galloped on strongly towards the death, but Little Mike, the Arlington Million hero, had already flown.

Point Of Entry also finished powerfully on the far rail, but had to make do with second place.

DAN STORMS TO MILE GLORY

Wise Dan lived up to his Hollywood billing with a ruthless triumph in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

The Charles Lopresti-trained five-year-old had been touted as one of the best milers to emerge from America for some time and lived up to the hype in this Grade One.

Ballydoyle's Excelebration got going late on in the day to take fourth place, while the Freddie Head-trained Moonlight Cloud was a shade disappointing.

GORGEOUS GEORGE TAKES JUVENILE TURF

Aidan O'Brien hit the target for the first time at this year's Breeders' Cup meeting when George Vancouver struck in the Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita.

Ballydoyle's inmate was delivered to perfection by Ryan Moore to take this Grade One over a mile in some style.

Whereas George Vancouver had a dream passage towards the line, the Roger Charlton-trained Dundonnell endured a fractious journey and finished fourth under James Doyle. Noble Tune came home in second place, while Balance The Books was third.

NICHOLLS MULLS CONTI PLAN

Paul Nicholls believes Kempton might not be the ideal track for his ultra-impressive Charlie Hall Chase winner Silviniaco Conti.

The six-year-old was promoted to 5-1 joint second-favourite for the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day with Paddy Power after he cruised to victory at Wetherby and it had been presumed the Grade One event would be next on his agenda.

Henry de Bromhead is leaning towards running Sizing Europe in the Clonmel Oil Chase on November 15 after soft ground scuppered his intention to try three miles again at Down Royal on Saturday.

Second in the previous two runnings of the JNwine.com Champion Chase, De Bromhead was eager to see his charge run over the trip on good ground, but overnight rain turned the conditions soft

O'BRIENS CLAIM TITLE DOUBLE

Joseph O'Brien put the seal on another brilliant year for his famous family when winning his first jockeys' championship at the age of 19 as the Irish Flat season closed at Leopardstown.

Champion apprentice only a year ago, and joint-champion the season before, O'Brien junior showed how much he had grown into the real deal in such a short time despite having a constant battle with his weight.

It is over 60 years since a jockey was crowned champion apprentice one year and champion jockey the next.

Ryan Moore believes he could have a triumphant first ride in the Emirates Melbourne Cup when he teams up with Mount Athos for Luca Cumani at Flemington on Tuesday.

The Newmarket handler has gone close in the past with Bauer and Purple Moon, and Moore is convinced Mount Athos has the ideal profile.

"I know what I have to do and in Mount Athos, I have a horse that I wouldn't swap for any other," he told www.betfair.com.

"He stays well, as a Chester Cup fourth and a Cesarewitch fourth underlines, but to win this race you need a horse with a turn of foot. And Mount Athos certainly has that.

Cue Card and Menorah face off in a fascinating five-runner renewal of the Sportingbet Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on Tuesday.

Colin Tizzard's Cue Card beat the subsequently impressive Old Roan Chase winner For Non Stop at Newbury and then finished second to Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle.

Tizzard has been happy with Cue Card's preparation ahead of his seasonal bow but said: "Menorah will be no pushover, that's for sure. He beat us over hurdles, though we beat him in the Arkle. We're getting 3lb, though, which helps."
