That's because "normally" people will have the HDMI connected directly to a stereo TV, and the optical to their 5.1 amp. You have a different setup. There's no harm in trying it.

Yeah - that makes sense. I will.

Yep - it seems to work! Thanks.

Although I now notice whilst watching non-5.1 material that the audio now has some clicks. Grrrr!!!!!

Re: NTL TV Drive FAQ

So I will give a succinct definitive explanation for anyone who may come to this thread:

If you are using HDMI (for audio and video) via a home cinema amp to a TV, the V+ may still detect that the TV is stereo only and refuse to output 5.1 sound through the HDMI cable (which is stupid, but hey).

In this case you should set the box to HDMI Audio Override: on.

The box will ask you to confirm that you have connected an optical digital connector - but you can ignore this warning and proceed.

You should then see that, on BBC HD, for example, you are now getting a DD signal from the V+ box.

(Now all I need to do is get the archiving to work via the VCR SCART socket to my DVD-R.... *sigh*)

Regarding :

Welcome to the V+ FAQ part 2

... and ...

Q: Why has a mute icon appeared on the TV screen?

TIP: Keep a little piece of paper in your battery compartment of your black S-A V+ remote to remind you how to switch between controlling the V+ volume and the TV volume. Write on it "Press and hold 'Vol+' and 'Mute' together for 3 seconds. Enter 9999 for TV or enter 0683 for V+." (Insert your own TV code.)
