Thanks SD - sorry, I did not see that until I had posted my question. I have called NTL and they have agreed to install me on Tue 16th.

Re: NTL TV Drive FAQ

That was a great first post on this thread! Well done!
We have had the TV drive box for a few months now, and I never knew half of what it was capable of until I read that post. I have actually tried out its recording feature of two channels at the same time and it works great!
I even tried out that "pausing of of live TV" and caught up the lost time by F/Fwding the adverts, too scared to try it again though

Re: NTL TV Drive FAQ

Does the VCR/DVDR SCART connection output RGB for better quality recordings on DVD ?

Thumbs up Re: NTL TV Drive FAQ

Does it also have a digital coaxial audio output? I have a spare dca input to my av amp for DD5.1. Also a spare optical audio input. Which is the better one to use? Great! FAQ posting.

No. As was explained to me when I asked this question, Scart plugs can apparently only be RGB one way, that is, either for input or output. NTL (or rather, Telewest) sensibly choose for the second Scart connector to use RGB for input, to allow RGB pass-through from a DVD player.

It's annoying, but a limitation of the Scart system more than anything else. You can always connect your DVD recorder to the TV Scart temporarily for backup purposes, although this won't use the TVDrive's special backup mode then.

I read recently that there is a federal law in the US stating that all cable boxes manufactured since 2004 must have a working Firewire video output. Now *that* would be the way to do backups...

Thanks for the info - using the TV SCART is not too much of a hardship

Re: NTL TV Drive FAQ

Chris, very useful post.

I've a question you should be able to answer. How visible to the user are the 3 tuners ? What I'm getting at (and this is with my elderly parents in mind) is do you just see 1 tuner (live TV) and the other 2 sit in the background recording when necessary (you just say record these programmes and it decides which of tuners 2 and 3 to use) ? ie the user doesn't really need to know that there are multiple tuners. My parents have great difficulty getting to grips with changing the 'input' from IDTV to analogue to cable - even my wife and kids have problems.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi evenolder,

You don't have to worry about which tuners to use, the TV Drive makes that decision automatically.

Re: NTL TV Drive FAQ

Hi.

Just a quick question about getting round this disabled scart business.

As I understand, if a TV is connected via HDMI, then you cant use the scarts to output a signal to somewhere else. But, could you use the RF out to output the NTL channels elsewhere whilst using HDMI.

I know the quality wont be great, but it would be better than nothing.

If someone could let me know, what would be great.

Thanks

Chris

Afraid not. The RF is only enabled if the SCART output is in use.

I read in 'the' Scientific Atlanta manual that the machine actually contains 4 tuners albeit one is dedicated (can't remember what for tho) - so it's reasonable to assume it could record from 3 maybe in the future
