You do realise that "gone for a Burton" is RAF slang for missing or died

Yes, it's an old fashioned phrase which means broken, kaput, finished etc. My mum still uses it to this day. Some say it originates from the time when Burton on Trent was a huge beer making centre and the wives of the time used to bemoan the fact that their hubbies had gone down the pub i.e. "gone for a Burton ale" hence my reference to beer.

An exceptional innings - I'd say he played a blinder.

Re: RIP: Eric "Winkle" Brown
Just been watching some of a BBC2 documentary on this guy's exploits on BBC2. When you look at how knighthoods are doled out to celebrity luvvies and their ilk you have to wonder why this guy didn't get more recognition than he did.
It's showing on iPlayer right now and is well worth a watch.

At a guess it's because he didn't know any secrets that might make things uncomfortable for government's or donate huge amounts of cash to political parties, being a genuine war hero doesn't meet the strict criteria to qualify. Sooner the honours system is scrapped the better imo
