Surround Sound with HDMI
I’m a little confused on how you get HD sound from an optical cable?
There is only one HDMI socket on the PS3. If I was to get a HDMI amp how do I connect it to the PS3 as the only HDMI socket goes to the HDTV??
Please explain as very confused. If I connect via optical surely I’m not getting true HD sound?
TIA

Re: Surround Sound with HDMI
HD sound is really just uncompressed surround sound, Not sure if an optical cable could carry the 6/7 individual streams without encoding it again.
Most HD amps have a HDMI port in and a HDMI out port, from the player it goes to HDMI in, and then from the HDMI out to your TV. That way sound data is intercepted but video is passed through.

Re: Surround Sound with HDMI
You'll get Dolby Digital sound but not sure if it'll be true HD sound...
I'll have a search around as I'll be interested in the answer myself..

OK, the main opinion is that using an optical cable will only give you DD5.1 or DTS and not true HD sound, for that you'll need a HD amp that uses the HDMI input for the sound

The PS3 does produce HDMI sound though? At the moment I just have an amp with my PS hooked up via optical.
I’m getting a HDMI amp so I can hook that up and hopefully get HDMI sound.
Thanks but cannot access at work. Have to wait to get home to look at.

Re: Surround Sound with HDMI
Nope, the PS3 does not produce HDMI1.3 (or DolbyHD or DTS-HD) sound. So the optical is gonna be the best you can get from the PS3

Re: Surround Sound with HDMI
Problem with HD sound is that it's only recently that they've agreed on a standard for it, a lot of manufacturers won't touch a standard until it's agreed on Otherwise you'll end up with the blu-ray/HD war again

Yup. Optical doesn't have the bandwidth for Dolby True HD or DTS-HD Master Audio.
HD audio requires HDMI.

Not quite...
Although the PS3 cannot output Dolby True HD or DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI as is, for decoding by an external receiver, it can decode them itself & output the audio over HDMI as uncompressed Linear PCM.
So you can get true multi-channel HD audio from the PS3... but you need an amp that can take it as uncompressed LPCM, rather than one that just takes the Dolby/DTS bitstream & decodes it itself.
No idea though why it can't output them as is... it has HDMI 1.3 after all.

Have also found a couple of reviews of it, which say it works, e.g.

A note to fellow PS3 owners: you'll need to use LPCM output to let the PS3 internally decode the audio because it currently lacks the ability to output all of the HD audio formats natively using bitstream through the HDMI connection. SA-CD owners will be disappointed to find out that this receiver doesn't support any of the advanced audio tracks of the discs, so we're stuck with plain stereo CD output.

Re: Surround Sound with HDMI
No prob.
I'd love to get a new amp sometime... I'm still using my old (2000, IIRC) DD/DTS 5.1 amp - Yamaha DSP-A5.
Still does a great job, but 7.1 HD audio from my Blu-rays would be nice.
