Could be but in another thread yesterday on here a poster stated that both sky and channel 4 offered the same cash for formula 1,which i took at face value, and from this it looks as if thats right even Bernie Eccleston said its not his fault the BBC done the deal with sky,When channel 4 were apparently interested.

Bernie Ecclestone has already said that he held talks with both channel 4 and Five with channel 4 being the one FOM chose to Persue. The reason for the breakdown in negotiations was down to the fact that channel 4 were not willing to wait, they wanted a deal for 2012 but Ecclestone was not going to break the BBC contract and risk a breach of contract case. The BBC On the other hand refused to talk to other free to air channels in fear of loosing all rights after 2013.
The BBC knew F1 has to be on free to air in one form or another and knew that the only way to keep F1 on the BBC was by selling their live rights to pay tv (in this case Sky) which allowed the BBC first choice on the free to air highlight package as they currently have a contract on place.
Ecclestone has stated his hands were tied due to the BBC currently having a contract for 2013 so they were the once who could and did Vito other free to air channels.

Now is the time for the BBC to renegotiate the lisence fee, either it should be rasied massively and cover computers as well or let the BBC not the government control the lisence fee

Re: SKY F1 HD Channel, Any Chance?
Personally I don't care for F1 or any other form of overpriced go-karting though I do appreciate that there is them that do. Those who are fans do have to recognise that the BBC do need to service a wide range of tastes and desires and can't let one "stream" consume disproportionate levels of money.
Now to get rid of the omnibus soaps not needed with all the catchup/PVR now out there.

Good explanation i can understand now why the BBC did what it did ie to keep it on the BBC at all costs in one form or another, the trouble is that kind of thinking has let pay tv slip in to formula 1,with the end result being when the contract is up again for full negotiaiton, they might well lose F1 to sky anyway.

l think it is a cast iron cert when the next F1 rights come up they will lose the rights in their entirety to Sky.

that's the point though they BBC may not loose the rights as F1 on free to air is protected via the concorde agreement so even if free to air are only offered a highlights package the bbc can still persue F1 in one form or another.
the only thing that is guaranteed is that Sky will be keeping full live rights as they can afford to pay for it and get first refusal when the current deal runs out.

but like Sky the BBC will get first refusal with a deal similar to what they currently have. only once the BBC refuse the deal will it go to tender. the BBC have a greater chance of keeping F1 after 2018 than another free to air channel does of getting it.
this is the reason BBC did the Sky deal as it keeps F 1 on the BBC for the forseable future even if its not the full season live.

I suppose so,but like cricket where sky opened their cheque book and it disappeared from free to air live coverage, formula 1 is going the same way.
Its sad but by 2018 the full impact of the cuts at the BBC will be in flow they might get first refusal, but i think the days of F1 free to air live are numbered.I am not a F1 follower that much a couple of races perhaps, but would not like to see it go fully pay tv.

It's not about how big the cheque book is it's the fact there is a free to air protection clause in the concorde agreement that the FIA, FOM and all the FOTA teams agree. Sure LIVE COVERAGE on free to air TV will be long gone but F1 will still be on free to air as long as a Concorde agreement exists as it benefits everyone from the FIA right down to the sponsors for exposure.

Yes i do understand the concorde agreement for F1.
But principally my main concern is free to air live coverage, not re-broadcast highlights shows.
The point i was trying to make about skys chequebook was that they will buy the live free to air coverge (when its next fully up for negotiation)leaving free to air with a highights package only.

Soon all sports will be pay-to-view, thanks Sky! And the sad thing is, people will pay it so it'll never go back to free-to-air.

Too true. Sports will continue to sell their TV rights to the highest bidder and that for the foreseeable future will be SKY. I feel sorry for pensioners who can't afford TV subscriptions.
