Using my dir615 with my superhub

Evening all,

Received my superhub and 100meg upgrade today and have been playing around trying to get the most out of the wifi side of things.

currently i can get nearly 90meg wired, just under 80meg on the 5ghz 300 setting any only about 60 when using 2.4ghz 300

the problem is the superhub cannot do both frequency ranges simultaniously and i have alot of battery powered devices that are not 5ghz compatable (kindle/smartphones etc)

Now i remember reading a thread months ago where someone was planning to add a wifi router to the superhub and use it for the 2.4ghz devices thus allowing the hub to be used at 5ghz and modem duty.

sadly i cant find the thread so dont know if it worked, or any problems he encountered getting to work.

Anyone have any ideas if such a thing is feasable? i still have my DIR 615 and some free time available this weekend

Re: Using my dir615 with my superhub

you can add the D Link to function the 2.4GHz band alongside your SH running the 5GHz band but i wouldnt advise it. buy a decent router if you can afford it

ya, the Linksys E3000. Lots ot peeps like the dir615 though so if you want to keep it and use the shub you really need to whack the speed down to 145mbit because 300 is very unstable

Thanks for the information, I will have a play connecting the 615 as I can't justify the cost of a new router just yet. And thanks for the tip regarding 300 instability.

Re: Using my dir615 with my superhub

You could try using dd-wrt on the DIR-615. I am running this firmware (build #18007) with a VMNG300 modem and it is very good: stable, lots of features plus reasonable range (esp. when you tweak the Tx power).

The key to this is to not use the Internet Port on the DIR 615.

1) Set the superhub up as you have done. I guess you have kept the standard 192.168.0.1 address with the 255.255.255.0 mask? Set the SH wireless to the 5GHz band.

2) Connect your pc to a DIR 615 wired LAN port. Can be done wirelessly but it's more hastle if you are changing those settings. Don't connect the DIR 615 to the SH yet.

3) Connect to the configuration page of the DIR 615. Go to the Network Settings page and change the IP address of the router to somthing out of the way (e.g. 192.168.0.254) and apply the setting.

4) Reconnect to the DIR 615 on the new address 192.168.0.254. Go back to the Network Settings page and un-check the 'Enable DHCP Server' box. Apply the setting.

5) Setup the wireless on the DIR 615 as you want.

6) Connect one of the LAN ports on the SH to one of the LAN ports on the DIR 615.

Job done. In this way the DIR 615 is acting as a simple wireless switch. DHCP is provided by the SH and only one NAT is being used (in the SH).

An alternative DHCP scheme is to disable DHCP in the SH and enable it in the DIR 615. This can have some advantages (like allowing the DNS relay function to work)

Enjoy.
