BT told to share ducting and infrastructure

I have just read on a website that OfCOM have tol dBT they must share their new broadband infrastructure, including infrastructure. Do we think that this could mean that VM could expand its fibre network more cost effectively now?

So BT can set the price according to that link.

Ofcom has allowed BT to set its own prices for firms wanting to use its network.

You can imagine it now, Yes SKY Broadband you can use our duct space that will be £1000 per meter per 96 mm duct and £10000.00 per fibre per km of dark fibre with 3 years upfront payment.


Those few little words from ofcom will ensure that any company buying into this will pay through the nose and then some.

At the moment I'm assuming this decision Is more to do with the ADSL providers already using the BT network.

The question of BT/Virginmedia sharing each others infrastructure is another one??

Virginmedia is already using the BT fibre network and BT is using Virginmedias network. More to do with Business and trunk routes but the point is there already do share there networks.

Unsure, a major sticking point at the moment is that everyone's favourite cable company has made some entirely unrealistic demands as far as getting access to the ducting goes, but that's how negotiations roll.

This is purely about ducting and poles not fibre by the way.

You're aware that BT could charge any price they liked for Fibre To The Cabinet and Premises? The charges are hardly extortionate, they're low
enough that some operators are offering free upgrade to them.

A far more telling note from this whole process is that uptake of Virgin Media services is so low that they weren't considered for having their networks opened up, having only 16% of the market - BT outsell Virgin even in commonly passed areas.

More info from ft.com states VM and BT are in talks again over shared infrastructure or ducting and pole access anyway.

So just to clarify. It mentions expanding the reach of the network in terms of being able to deliver super-fast broadband. Will they be able to supply the TV service aswell. I imagine if they are laying their OWN cables it will be setup to do so?
