What is happening

I play counter strike and look after a server for a clan recently at certain times this server becomes a struggle to use. I also play on another server which I have had high latency issues on, I traced that problem to Entanet and they are looking into it but for the clan server seems Virgin are at fault as this tracert shows.

this does make playing somewhat difficult since servers tend to kick on most pings over 100 to 150 now.

Re: What is happening

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but all the Virgin/NTL hops looks pretty fine to me on your traces.

Both traces mention the route has good throughput rates.

Re: What is happening

Try playing CS with packet loss and on the one you said was fine there were over 4 different places where packets 10% were lost.

Code:
==================================================
=== VisualRoute report on 12-Jan-2008 23:10:12 ===
==================================================

Report for 91.197.34.3

This trace was started on 12-Jan-2008 23:09:43.
The host '91.197.34.3' has been found, and is reachable in 13 hops. The TTL value of packets received from it is 52.In general this route offers a good throughput, with hops responding on average within 46ms. However, hop 11 in network 'OH Telecom Router Interfaces' is noticeably slower than others.

Roundtrip time to 91.197.34.3, average = 86ms, min = 70ms, max = 115ms -- 12-Jan-2008 23:10:12
With a ping that is up and down faster than a yoyo from on this tracert 86 to 115ms.. PPL on ADSL had pings half mine and Eric was on from Zimbawbe and his ping was half mine. Another team member from Belgium was on same server with a ping of 25ms.

Re: What is happening

Packet loss affects gaming much more than ping times. On most games (CS excluded) you can get away with fairly high pings. With any packet loss at all, games become unplayable, usually with the effect of you left sitting there watching some frozen action for a few seconds at a time. It's usually caused by an overloaded/faulty router somewhere along the line to the game server but its sometimes difficult to pinpoint, with traceroutes not actually showing the router at fault. Not sure why but I suspect packets are suddenly let go by a faulty router and routers further up the chain bork at so many packets and then refuse to acknowledge them (lame guess).
Anyway, my normally stable connection has been experiencing PL for the last 24 hours or so, so I suspect this is a VM problem.

Re: What is happening

My bad, I misread your post to mean the complaint was latency, not ploss.
I hope you both get it resolved soon, 2% is enough to give me the heebies.

Have you had any improvement/degrade in service since then?

Kind regards
