Not at all

This page has posts & links about the legality of it, from the recent ruling in the US which moved it from being a "grey area" to being 100% legal:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/26...d-page-96.html

I Jailbroke my iPhone 3GS last year, using "Redsn0w", & later did it again using "Blackra1n" after Apple updated the firmware.

I Jailbroke my iPhone 4 this year using "JailBreakMe.com".

Very quick & easy each time, & easy to remove if you don't want it anymore.

There are a lot of Apps out there which, for one reason or another, are not on the App Store & can only be obtained via Jailbreaking. A couple of my favourites are SBSettings (process manager, & swipe toggles for various settings) and IntelliScreen (Lockscreen widgets for Mail, SMS, News, Weather).

Re: The iPhone thread

We are looking at using Growl on our Macs at work for various notifications (software installs completing etc), and I just found in interesting plugin. It's called Prowl. It enables you to send growl notifications to the web, and also, if you install the iPhone app (which costs £1.79), send push notifications to your iPhone.

You can register at http://prowl.weks.net/

You can also do that for Android, for free.

It's free, but not as good.. I could have found a free option on the iPhone, but I like the one I chose because you can configure what notifications to allow/block and when you want them.

This is important for me as the computers I am running growl on are at work, and generally running from 9am to 11:45pm so could send me notifications when I am not at work (which I may not want).

I also like the fact you don't actually have to run anything on the phone unless you want to reconfigure the notifications, and you don't need to be on the same network. Oh, and you can log into their website and check the last few notifications.

You could combine it with Tasker which is near-infinitely configurable to set it up how you like it.

Re: The iPhone thread

Which still requires an app to be run. Thus taking up valuable memory.

Anyhow, I couldn't run either. I don't have an Android phone.

Yeah but I just wanted to point out you don't need an iPhone for it.

Also head's up for everyone wanting a free case, the program ends at the send of September.

You don't. Sorry, didn't mean to imply that you did. That's one thing I like about Growl. It covers multiple platforns.

Re: The iPhone thread

Well, after a lot of drama in the Jailbreaking community, there are now two tools to Jailbreak devices running iOS 4.1. Both use the same bootrom exploit, & would require a hardware change to block (as such it's apparently a "pwned for life" Jailbreak).

My favourite new app: The CAMRA Good Beer Guide

Search for pubs using GPS, postcode, place name / address, or Tube station. Pub info, reviews, & beer info. Brewery directory with beer info.

Re: The iPhone thread

My daughter has a 3gs and someone jailbroke it for her. It worked ok for a week then it started having random apps opening & closing with random phone turn offs. She was told the only way to un-jailbreak the phone was to do a factory reset which she done and now the phone wont turn on. I'm from the darkside so phones born of fruit I have no idea about. Any thoughts or idea's as to what may have gone wrong.

Re: The iPhone thread

Yup, had the same problem. you need to download the firmware from here 4.0.1 (no newer than 4.0.1)
Launch itunes on your PC or Mac
follow the instructions here to put the iphone into DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) and use the instructions in the first link to load the firmware onto the device.

You now have a non-jailbroken iphone running a jailbreakable firmware.
Jailbreak it as normal using jailbreakme.com. Once you have Cydia on it, install ultrasn0w from the list of cydia apps and you have an unlocked, jailbroken iphone which is hacktivated (no need to connect to itunes to change sims)

Spoke to #1 daughter & she is posting the phone to me (and all associated cables) so you may be getting some questions if I get stuck
