o2 calling partners virgin phone to poach custom!?

My partner had a call this afternoon seemingly from o2 curtesy of Virgin Mobile to offer a great deal for my partner to move to o2 on a mobile contract. Now o2 has not and will not have been given any contact details by my partner so they sure have not got the virgin mobile number off us.

Now assuming the first explanation coming to mind is mass dialing of random numbers and each network having a pretty unique first 5 digits for all numbers on there network being the reason they know it to be a virgin mobile number to have it said they are calling on behalf of virgin mobile etc, in other words a scam and nobody will have given this company (because I doubt o2 opperate in this way) my partners number. Well there has to be another explanation as they also knew and mentioned my partners name when they called.

Anyone know what this almost certain scam is and how they will have got my partners number and her details connected to the virgin mobile phone?.

Re: o2 calling partners virgin phone to poach custom!!!?

Whilst a mobile number can be traced to it's origional operator, it can then be ported any number of times to other operators. So while a call to that number is routed through the origional operator the customer could effectivley be with ANY mobile operator. I still have a Virgin Mobile number, but I'm now a Tesco Mobile customer.

Think your conclusion is more than likely correct. There is no way they would know what operator you were with unless thay had inside info. Either that or it's plain cold calling.

Re: o2 calling partners virgin phone to poach custom!!!?

its plain cold calling

i had a similar call just a few weeks ago .... also claiming that they were from virgin and that they could offer me a better deal as my contract was about to expire .... virgin had apparently partnered with o2 to offer customers a great deal (at least thats what the guy tried to tell me) and they could offer me a better contract on o2

i immediatley became suspicious as if it had been a genuine call from virgin they would have known that i had already renewed my contract just a few days earlier, so i started asking questions as to who they were and it turned out that they had no connection with virgin whatsoever .... they were just an independent company selling o2 contracts on a commission basis ... i asked how they knew my contract was nearly up and he told me he didn't actually know that and it was just one of numerous scripted ways of getting people to listen.

Don't be scammed by these type of calls, virgin mobile will be able tp prove to you that they are actually virgin mobile and they certainly won't offer you a contract on o2
