Smile Wireless for telewest/virgin cable

Hello everyone, first post on this site. I need some help setting up wireless at home. I'm not very tech savvy!!

I have broadband at home supplied by Virgin (previously Telewest). The boradband is delivered down a thick cable (like my Sky TV cable) not a network cable like I've seen in friends houses.

I have a Linksys wireless router but all the connections are ethernet ports.

So here is the question!! :

Can I get a wireless router with the connection for my big thick cable so I can have a wireless network at home?

Th cable is currently connected to the computer via the old Telewest Motorala surf board I think.

Many thanks for your help!!

Re: Wireless for telewest/virgin cable

the cable you are talking about does that go in to the modem and then a cable to your PC?

The router connects between the modem and PC it doesn't take the place of the modem.

Hi Stephen, thanks for the reply.

The cable goes into the modem and then connects to the computer via USB.

Can I just take an ethernet cable from the modem and put it into the router?

Re: Wireless for telewest/virgin cable

Yes an ethernet from modem to router and then you would need an ethernet to a PC as well as having the wireless on a laptop or anything else.

However I think that maybe Virgin would replace your modem as its pretty old now. Does your PC have ethernet too?

Hi Stephen, many thanks for the great advice

The PC is new-ish and has an ethernet port.

Will I need to run the set up disc on the PC that I got with the router?

I can control router settings from my PC?

Then I need to:
Connect router to modem via ethernet
Router to PC via ethernet

Laptop is new so had built in wireless so dont need to do anything there!!

Cheers Stephen

Re: Wireless for telewest/virgin cable

The router will have an IP address that you can type into internet explorer at the address bar and login using the details in the router instructions.

You shouldn't need to run the set up disc. Connecting by ethernet should 'just work' as the PC will see it as a network connection.

So turn off PC and modem.

Connect router to modem

Connect router to PC by ethernet

Turn on modem then router

Finally turn on PC and it should connect.

You can then setup the routers security and set up the wireless on the laptop.
