That might count if you've shaken the hand, afraid not if you haven't

Nearly time for a day off. Don't get me wrong, I like the job. But when you haven't had a day off since New Year's Eve, then yeah you crave a day off. Wednesday, phone will be staying on airplane mode.

Jeremy Clarkson's column in my red top today made me chuckle:
Quote:
CRIKEY. The French government announced this week that it is bringing back national service.
All of the country’s 16-year-olds will have to do time wearing a uniform, standing to attention, singing the national anthem and then, at the first hint of gunfire, raising a white flag and running away.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
With it being cold today I thought I'd use one of the Calor gas fires that came from my mothers house. Cleaned it up and serviced the burners and jets. Works OK but the gas flow to the centre burner needs tweaking as it's a bit strong. Need to find out where that is set. Still I have two full 26Kg gas pots so "free" heat.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
I know that home emergency cover is a bit of a con but just had renewal notice for British Gas 4 (gas, heating, electrics, plumbing, drains) going from £690 to £833.
Zoiks!!!
So I phone BG and get offers of £580 (no excess) and £380 (£60 excess), went with the latter as £450 difference (to renewal) would be a lot of calls.
I know I could get cheaper or rely on pay as need but it's nice to know things will get fixed. It's just saving that much with a simple call.

I never bother with stuff like that, touch wood not been a problem for 22 years, has it saved you money since you started doing it, if not maybe the money not spent would have paid for a car?
I recommend using the money saving site Topcashback you can save alot of money if you go through there if the place you used is on there.

It's certainly saved us money but it's also more for convenience and being stung by a less than honest local merchant who charged to do work they didn't need to cover.
It's also more convenience to just have one number for most needs.
We do have a local plumber but he doesn't do the drains.
We have an electrician who is very good.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
The only thing i have had to do is call a plumber out 3-4 times to fix a few things like broken radiator valves and a faulty gas valve on the boiler, total cost is probably £300-400 over the last 22 years.
Hopefully it will continue like this in the future.

Going to pot roast a brisket joint this afternoon for our dinner. 3-4 hours will make it "fall apart in the mouth" tender.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4
Car passed its MOT today. Just needed a couple of wiper blades.
She will need 4 tyres in the not-to-distant future but it's not urgent.

I fitted 4 new tyres to mine as they were borderline legal and car then fails MOT (scrapped) a month later.
Protyre are really good for prices and our depot price was lower than web. On a 16" for the Mondeo I chose the Falken F310 ECOrun. A grade wet stop, B for "fuel" (resistance) and 67dB noise so quiet as well. The same tyre on larger wheels is no where near as good.

I would have been tempted to get 4 wheels from the scrappie and then sell on the ones with new tyres.
I knew the tyres were lean from the last MOT but they'd only done an extra 1300 miles so I took a chance just in case something more significant came up. Car's only 9 years old and 54K miles but you never know.

I used Falkens (195/45/14) on the Metro, (14" Compomotive alloy rims) excellent grip in the wet. We have a good independent tyre specialist in the town. They really know their business and take great care of alloys using stick on weights and final tightening in diagonal sequence with a torque wrench. You also see stacks of racing rims and slicks in the workshop so I think the local enthusiasts use them.
Though the Colt has steel rims I'll still check them out first.
