Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
Try your local builders merchants annonymouse, there's much more room in the outside for you to practise in. jewsons is a good one as they have a subsidiary company they put people forward to as well. Don't forget to add this to your job search to if nothing else!!

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
I've emailed the Bolton and Manchester branches of Jewsons. Worth a shot...

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
I've got an interview on Wednesday in Crewe, of all places. I'm hoping to reclaim the travelling expenses, but I'm not holding my breath. You have to make an appointment just to make such a claim by phoning them, and they don't have free phones any more. You can't do anything from the actual jobcentre except to use their PCs to look for jobs.
The phone number is a premium-rate 0845 number...and you usually get put on hold. Further evidence of the aforementioned insane genius - how many people will give up after several minutes of this, because they a) can't afford it, or b) have better things to do than make money for the DWP? How many people will be phoning up to try to get a problem resolved, fail to get through in a reasonable amount of time, and thus fail to get the problem sorted - and possibly lose benefit as a result? If you complain, the jobcentre staff just say 'you have to phone them' - it's all they can say. So suddenly it's your fault.
It's clever, isn't it?

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
0845 is local rate, not premium.

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
Actually 084x is "lo-call", not local. There is no local/national rate on any network any more, landline or mobile.
084x and 087x are revenue sharing services. The amount you pay (and the amount the operator gets from BT) is lower on 084x than it is on 087x.
The nearest you can get to the old local rate 0345 numbers BT used to operate is the new 03xx range which is charged as a geographic number, even though it isn't one. That means (IIRC) the operator doesn't get a cut of the proceeds, and should be treated the same as an 01 or 02 number by your service provider for charging/call bundles etc.
IMO all government departments should be using 03x numbers by now. There's no excuse for forcing people to pay to access services that are typically required by the lowest paid in society to start with.

Especially when so many of these departments are set up to deal with the poorest people.

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
There is an 0345 number. Is that cheaper?
All I know is ringing them up costs a bloody fortune I can't afford! I have to go to the local UCAN centre, and spend ages waiting since, entirely in accordance with Sod's Law, there's always someone on it - and usually a queue. But I'll be damned if I'll pay them one more bloody penny after the way they've treated me and every other poor sod on Universal Credit!

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
If you have free calls to 01 and 02 numbers, then 03 ones are generally included as well.

Re: You almost have to admire the insane genius
^ What he said. The 03 range should be treated as geographic by your service provider. If you have bundled minutes, then they should apply to calls made to an 0345 number. If you don't, then the per-minute rate should still be the same as it is to an 01 or 02 number.
