Exactly years ago when business shut down do two Weeks in the summer and the like the banks were left out so we came up with the bank holiday concept which in time replaced the other work related holidays as factories and mills shut down. Incidentally we do.very badly out of it, most countries get loads more than us.

Not really abuse because there is no obligation to pay extra or give days off .Example is my wifes place of work(a large freezer shop chain) who do not pay extra for working bank holidays or give days off in lue .Recently they have started opening untill 10pm this included yesterday and today,no overtime rates ,sunday rates or anything just basic minimum wage +10p all round.Various companies i have worked for had no special rates either for their PAYE staff

We give double time pay for bank holiday working (if required, which it rarely is), or equivalent time off in lieu.

I think/know if you work the bank holiday you have to have a day of in lieu, you will hopefully find she has 28 days a year holiday entitlement which accounts for them rather than most peoples twenty days

No - our colleagues get between 25-38 days annual leave (plus 3 at Christmas) and 8 days Public Holiday (9 last and this year).

Question..As the majority of Bank holidays are tucked into school holidays do parents have to take their holidays around Bank holidays?Do they miss out as a result?

If you are part time and your employer gives workers additional time off on bank holidays, this should be given pro rata to you as well, even if the bank holiday does not fall on your usual work day.

I think the change to 28 days from the previous 20 days was because many people had bank/public holidays included in their 20 days, so increasing the statutory minimum to 28 counteracted the problem of your employer counting bank/public holidays as part of your leave, as you'd now still have 20 days after bank/public holidays are removed.

But...You do not have to have a day off in lieu, or receive extra pay, if you work a bank/public holiday.

I work in retail - The large DIY chain.
It is expected for most to work part of the day, minimum 4hrs max 8hrs (plus lunch break).
Silly how all want that urgent item for garden upgrade.
