Cancer breakthrough?
Quote:
A therapy that retrains the body's immune system to fight cancer has provoked excitement after more than 90% of terminally ill patients reportedly went into remission.
White blood cells were taken from patients with leukaemia, modified in the lab and then put back.
But the data has not been published or reviewed and two patients are said to have died from an extreme immune response.
Experts said the trial was exciting, but still only a baby step.
The news bubbled out of the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting in Washington DC.
The lead scientist, Prof Stanley Riddell from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer research Centre in Seattle, said all other treatments had failed in these patients and they had only two-to-five months to live.
He told the conference that: "The early data is unprecedented."

It's early days of course but this does sound like a very exciting development indeed. Fingers crossed that it represents a much needed breakthrough.

Re: Cancer breakthrough?
I saw this and it's ridiculously good. We must be missing something. Cancer breakthroughs have always been incremental, not revolutionary.
I mean look at this line again:
Quote:

|
That's just a miracle. It's not a nice step forward or an encouraging sign. 90% of people soon to die went into remission. Then look at this line from The Guardian's report: https://www.theguardian.com/science/...linical-trials
Quote:
In one study, 94% of participants with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) saw symptoms vanish completely. Patients with other blood cancers had response rates greater than 80%, and more than half experienced complete remission.
|
Across the board for blood cancer 50% of them had no cancer left having previously presented as terminal.
This would have to be biggest breakthrough in cancer treatment of all time no?

Re: Cancer breakthrough?
It's the increased immune response that might be a problem. Looks promising though!

Re: Cancer breakthrough?
We lost a near neighbour to leukaemia just before Christmas, he was only in his early 40's and left a wife and 2 primary age children. He and his family suffered for around 2 years before no more could be done for him. It'd indeed be marvellous if this could herald a new era in cancer treatment so let's all hope it can be proved effective and made available as soon as possible.

IMO its wayyy to early to celebrate or even feel encourged yet because....

Untill the data gets an intensive peer review its too early to really comment.

Re: Cancer breakthrough?
Does this mean I'll be able to smoke again in the pub with my pint and friends?
If so then it is indeed a breakthrough.

Re: Cancer breakthrough?
It does not say what types of cancer there are many types to deal with.

From the OP's link

The researchers genetically modified the t-cells to engineer a new targeting mechanism - with the technical name of chimeric antigen receptors - to target acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Re: Cancer breakthrough?
You obviously easily confuse humour and abuse - I made a pun on your post, and Kursk ran with the theme...

Oh ffs Tweedle we're just having a bit of fun. You're not a legend you're on about the film with Will Smith.
If you think you have been abused, your experience on Internet forums must be limited or you've had a sheltered life.
If I have distressed you, I apologise. My bad.
