Sometimes my TiVo refuses to let me set a recording and I have to do it later on and at other times it won't let me move forward on the EPG.

This also seems to be at a time when VOD is down.

Does the TiVo need to keep talking to the VM servers for these functions?

If not, could these be other issues connected to the sluggishness of the CPU?

I tried the EPG during todays total outage (not even any channels) and it worked fine although I did not try to set a recording. As before the recent update, the user interface is much quicker when the connection is down including starting/stopping recordings. For me, Tivo slowed down dramatically with last years update which I put down to constant verification over the network rather than looking at the smartcard.

Off the Bit is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Does the TiVo need to maintain a connection to VM to set recordings, show the EPG

When my internet service was down for 17 days back in February, my Tivo was persumably disconnected too - I couldn't access On Demand, and when the phone support talked me through the settings it was apparently not connected. I could still watch live TV and recordings, and the EPG remembered two weeks of programmes from when I last had it on before the service went down. I could still record from this EPG, although obviously it got increasingly out of date and less useful.

Towards the end of the period, I had a popup message warning me that I needed to reconnect the Tivo or I wuld be unable to use all services, but of course once the EPG hadn't been updated for 14 days I wasn't able to record from that anyway - I didn't try a manual recording I'm afraid, so I can't confirm if that would have worked.

Interesting. More and more often why I try to set a recording from the EPG I get a message saying that it can't currently carry out my request and to try later.

I had assumed that this was because the connection was down, but from what's been said this doesn't appear to be the case.

The sluggish behaviour of the TiVo must be to blame for this as well.

Recently it won't even let me delete something on occasions!!!
