V+ Sky One recording HD problem

I noticed last week when recording Hawaii 5-0 on Sky1 HD the beginning was really choppy, picture breaking up, that coincided with recording Top Gear in HD, the end of that got messed up

Thursday night, recorded Mad Men on Sky 1 HD, same time recorded new BBC1 drama on BBC1 HD, BBC1 was ok, but SKY1 recording, and live was unwatchable, as soon as I stopped recording Sky1 HD, the picture was ok.

So I did a few experiments recording 2 channels simultaneously, and it only seems to be Sky 1 HD which goes wrong when recording that and another HD channel.

Anyone else have this on Samsung V+ box? I tried turning it off and on again etc, and the problem has happened on several different days

Re: V+ Sky One recording HD problem

I suspect the hard drive is dying. You could try doing a reformat using the instructions here, but beware this will lose all your recordings. If that doesn't fix it, you'll need to give VM a call.

Re: V+ Sky One recording HD problem

That would be annoying, as I was only given this unit in October to replace the one that died stopping it from booting

Seems strange it only happens on Sky One HD, maybe I'll keep a "broken" recording there and see if that helps, otherwise we'll have to work through what's there and reformat.

Cheers for the suggestion

Re: V+ Sky One recording HD problem

I posted to to Virgin forums, yesterday late afternoon, got a response lunch today from Virgin to say they have identified a problem with signal levels, they'll send a tech out to fix. Fingers crossed it is signal levels and they fix it without replacing box again.

Good luck. I'm now on my 3rd V+ box within 12 months due to the problems you described. When the tech arrived last time, he looked at a screen which showed him a record of all the recent faults with the box. The tech was astonished at just how often the box "failed". My second V+ box was only 7 months old when it was replaced with my 3rd.

I'd start watching your recordings now!

Wow Chad you have been unlucky, in the 9 years I have had cable tv the only STB replacements have been through upgrades of service.

Re: V+ Sky One recording HD problem

d'oh, missus rang this morning to say they had to replace the box

That's very poor, Samsung V+ HD box 1 died, with me owning it for about a year, when engineer replaced that one, he said it was a known fault (had starneg display wouldn't switch off/on), loads had been replaced, seems like recall sould have been done, rather than refurb, roll out again.

Box 2 dies after me owning it 4 months I guess the plan is for ppl to get fed up and upgrade to TIVO? I must admit it did cross my mind.

Oh well, at least there's on demand/iplayer/catch up and "other means" to get back recordings I've lost

Re: V+ Sky One recording HD problem

hmmn, not happy, missus didn't tell me that engineer left without testing box, as there was a problem registering it!

so I turned it off and on again this evening (he told her not to) box started up fine, but has same problem recording 1 HD channel and Sky 1 HD

Re: V+ Sky One recording HD problem

Problem has mysteriously vanished now! No one from Virgin bothered to tell me it was a known issue, that had been fixed, but I thought I'd record Sky One HD and another HD channel, and a few tests have all been successful!
