We had one of the cheaper varieties of Wolf Blass once. It was alright for cooking, but not for drinking. We've given up on big label Aussie reds. Too big too bold, not refined enough. You can get some glorious refined Riojas for £12.
Oh. Drinking a can of Carlsberg Export, after sharing a bottle Argie Trivento Viognier over dinner. Nice wine...

I think this is the final straw for me tbh, I think WB have become a bit too big for their boots. The yellow label stuff used to be extremely palatable as was the presidents selection but I guess increasing yields and sourcing inferior grapes has driven the quality down as they've banked on previous reputation for sales. I like a good Rioja like Marques de Caceres or Marques de Riscal but my fave is a good SA wine like Kanonkop Pinotage or Kanonkop Paul Sauer.

Riscal is nice, but overpriced. Extremadura, which borders on Rioja produces some fine wines that can't be called Rioja. We've had a couple of them through Laithwaites. The Gran Reservas are some of the best I've had and can't be beaten on price.

Re: The what are you drinking now thread
A new one from ASDA: Barefoot Shiraz from California
Wine Enthusiast have given them a "Best Buy" award.... I'd hate to taste the worst because this is pretty nasty

Re: The what are you drinking now thread
Thanks for that, Peter.
I was tempted by the Barefoot Shiraz, but as the prize award was for 2008, and the bottle didn't have a year on it, I gave it a miss.
Bought a nice bottle of Malbec instead, which is going down very well.... (hic)

Re: The what are you drinking now thread
On the barefoot I did notice the lack of date later and a hastily attached label at the bottom of the original one at the rear... once bitten eh, and I hope I don't find any toenail clippings as the name suggests.
Noticed the Wolf Blass on offer SB but I swerved it because the quality is so variable these days and I've given up on the stuff but it's hardly surprising when you consider that half of Australia is either on fire or underwater at any given time. Glad you got a decent bottle anyway
My best buy at ASDA is always the Marques del Norte Rioja. 2009 stuff is superb if you can get it and 2010 is very good. At just over 4 quid a bottle you can't really go wrong. There's a couple of bottles ready here for the guests over the weekend.
