MS Word problem

I use Word 97 and for some unknown reason if I now open existing documents or a new blank page it always opens in "Page Layout View" with a blank window down the left side, when it should open in "normal view". I can switch it to the view required but when I open it again it has defaulted back to "Page Layout View" I have looked in Tools/Options but cannot find an answer.

Re: MS Word problem

Try clicking on "view" then change to "normal" just worked for me but I have Word 2003

I can do that, or use the buttons at the bottom left, but I cannot get it to open in normal view. To my knowledge no settings have been changed

Re: MS Word problem

I find that the view setting is determined on my machine by the last document I opened on it. If I open someone's document and find they saved it in 'normal view' then subsequent documents on my machine open that way. Personally I prefer Page Layout view, and to ensure it stays that way I make a point of ensuring, before I close Word, that I put a document in that view and save it.

Having said all that, I'm using Word 2k which may behave differently...

Re: MS Word problem

Try opening your "Normal.dot" and saving it again (as a template) in the correct view.

you may have to save it under a new name, delete the original & rename the new one or something.

Re: MS Word problem

Thanks for that, I seem to remember that tip from somewhere, but have never had to use it.
Curiously another very basic single page Word.doc that has always been in "Normal View" is now opening in "Master Document" view I know it is not really a major problem, just one of the annoying tricks of MS bloatware.

I have now got the "New" doc opening in "Normal View" again.
