Re: Buying a Smart TV
Probably a good idea sticking to the suggested ones above. Worth noting that the majority can have 3rd party apps installed on them with some tweaks if you're savvy and comfortable with it.

Apparently and l am no expert on this but because today's TV' are much thinner it requires a good sound bar to get the most optimum sound out of it.

Re: Buying a Smart TV
We are having problems tuning our new TV in as we go to auto tuning and no channels are forthcoming so far.

Check your regional settings are for the UK as channels in other countries are often different.

Re: Buying a Smart TV
Remember that there'll be Analogue, satellite and digital (DVB) tuning. The first is only of use if you're connecting to the RF output of say a VCR and should be skipped otherwise. The second only applies if you have a dish connected.
Obviously check the antenna is correctly plugged in.

We don't have a antenna as we have cable but still no channels or pictures.

Tuning does not apply to VM's cable channels as these can only be viewed using VM's equipment. (TIVO or VBOX HD) generally through an HDMI lead to the set.
The set is attempting to tune terrestrial channels on the Freeview DVB system and that requires an antenna. If you do not have one then skip this.

Re: Buying a Smart TV
You could always try an indoor aerial Den, if you want Freeview channels as well as Cable. If you're in a reasonable strength area and can get the aerial near a window its surprising the number of channels you can pick up.
Can be useful if your Tivo is busy with other channels or want access to Freeview channels VM don't have (e.g. the excellent film channel 'Talking Pictures').

Re: Buying a Smart TV
Although our area strictly needs an rooftop antenna we've got the full set of Freeview channels including HD using a good loft antenna.

There is a good reason for this.. To get a decent sound, the cone inside the speaker needs a fair amount of space as it needs to be relatively large, or needs to be able to move a lot, to vibrate the air around the set efficiently. I am simplifying it quite a lot, and there is a lot to speaker design that doesn't involve large amounts of cone, but in general I've found that the sound from LCD and LED TVs has been a little bit lacking in bass, and this is the main reason why.
I bought a Samsung sound bar for my previous Samsung TV (which died just before xmas). Wierdly, the LG TV I have it attached to now makes far better use of it than the Samsung ever did.
