See a penny, pick it up?

Remember this old adage?

"See a penny, pick it up, and all day long you'll have good luck?"

Well not any more.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-39130530

I should now be, "See any money, don't pick it up, or you'll end up in the dock."

This is a waste of time an a joke, I'm sorry but if you can't look after it it's your loss.

I myself was in London Stratford shopping centre I bought a need Parmesan Pretzel and put the change from a £20 in my pocket.

A short while later it wasn't in my pocket, I didn't lose ant sleep over it, and thought "well I hope the person who found it need it or put it to good use."

Re: See a penny, pick it up?

I had this last year, found a £50 lying on the floor in a store, and debated for 5 minutes what to do with it. Eventually, my conscience got the better of me and I handed it in. This was like a week or 2 before Christmas so would have been a nice bonus if I had been dishonest and kept it.

Re: See a penny, pick it up?

Lost lots of notes across the years but never found any..I think I'd ask the shopkeeper first and if no luck into the charity tin..

Re: See a penny, pick it up?

Some of the above assumes that every police officer is honest, which certainly isn't true.

Do the police issue receipts for money handed in? IIRC the money goes to the finder if not claimed within a certain length of time.

If you have this dilemma again resolve it by sending the 50 quid to me. I will get piddled with a clear conscience and a big mac

Not anymore it doesn't, they say now that they can't be sure the money isn't from the proceeds of crime and keep it now so I've heard.

Re: See a penny, pick it up?

The ATM was in the shop itself I believe? the right thing to have done, and one I've done before would have been to give it to the shopkeeper.

I don't know if the shop was a small local type, if it was like mine, it was highly likely that the money would have been reunited with its owner.

Maybe that's just me though .

Out in the street, that's different, unless I saw it drop, I would most likely keep it.

Re: See a penny, pick it up?

Difference between notes and coins (other that value) is that notes are individually identifiable so "could" be traced to an owner where as notes (normally) are not unique. That said, Kruger Rands are probably valuable enough to warrant handing in.

So I would hand in paper money if found, or attempt to. At very least leave note with shopkeeper so "owner" could get in touch.

Coins? What are the serial numbers of all the £10, £20 and £50 notes you currently 'own'?

Didn't say that I knew but that they are identifiable. But I also guess it could be possible a machine could record which notes it issued and to whom. It's just that it is (more) possible than with coins that are more anoymous.
