Re: Coming soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 1
If Virgin are still charging the "Tivo tax" when they have moved all of their customers over to Tivo, and it is charged per box. Would this not be Virgins version of the Sky's "HD sub"?

no because nobody is forcing Sky customers to subscribe to the HD channels whereas VM have said, have they not, that they want all of their TV customers using Tivo. Therefore, either the £3 per month has to be passed on to every customer, forcing every TV bill up by £3 per month regardless of the package, or VM absorbes the £3 per month themselves.

Lets not forget that TiVo is the only choice for all VM's new customers who want a PVR.
Part one of the get everyone onto TiVo plan has already started

Re: Coming soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 1
I notice that 'Mad Men' is coming to Sky Atlantic in a couple of weeks. Sky Atlantic has now passed its first year of operation, so maybe the special exclusivity price that was originally offered to Virgin Media is no longer a sticking point.
Given the interest in 'Mad Men', I wonder whether we will be getting some good news relating to Sky Atlantic soon? Keeping my fingers crossed on this one!

I'm not prepared to pay £3 per month for that when what VM should be doing is providing us with something as basic as a dynamic EPG which all the other major platforms manage rather than trying to sell something to the masses which the masses seem not to want due to the extra money they would have to pay to get it.

Seemingly true, form what you've said.
And are all the new customers being charged the additional £3 per month?

^^^ Quoted for truth.
VM can say "our customers love it!", but in some cases its "our customers love recording programmes and they love the only option we allow them."

BBC director general Mark Thompson has confirmed plans for an iTunes-style download service that will allow viewers to buy programmes minutes after they have finished on TV.
Thompson said the proposal, called Project Barcelona, would allow viewers to "purchase a digital copy of a programme to own and keep [for] a relatively modest charge".
Thompson was not specific about the timescale or pricing, but sources said it was hoped that programmes would be available to buy at the same time as they go on the iPlayer. Early speculation put the price at £1.89 a show.
Anticipating criticism that viewers were being made to pay twice for the same content, Thompson said: "This is not a second licence-fee by stealth or any reduction in the current public service offering from the BBC – it's the exact analogy of going into a high-street shop to buy a DVD or, before that, a VHS cassette.
"For decades the British public has understood the distinction between watching Dad's Army on BBC1 and then going out to buy a permanent copy of it. Barcelona is the digital equivalent of doing the second."

Just wonder what peoples views are on this.

If I taped (on VHS) or recorded it live to DVD I would not have to go out and buy the program. Why would anyone pay for a copy if you could just record it when it airs in the first instance.
It seems to me that the result of this would be effectively telling viewers that if you don't watch or record when we (BBC) say, you will have to pay for something that others, who pay the same licence fee have been able to access for free.
Maybe I'm missing something. ???

Some of these can be incorporated in the next Sky box, but Tivo has them now and some of the functionality can't be used by anyone else apart from Tivo due to patents.
|
Also remember that Youview will be launching within the next couple of months with many similar features to the TiVo box plus BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5. High Definition channels will be included, as well as the choice of pay-TV channels and on-demand programmes from TV providers such as BT Vision and Talk Talk TV.
The Youview box is just a one-off payment to purchase, rumoured to be between £79.99 and £100.00 and can be connected to any broadband line. Some pretty cool features are lined-up:
1. 7-day TV Guide – switch from now & next to full grid-style view in landscape mode (like TVGuide – TVGuide.co.uk TV Guide – acrossair)
2. Create new timer events – set programmes to record from your phone (like Sky+ – Sky+ – BSkyB)
3. Stream content stored on your YouView Box to your phone/netbook (like SlingBox – SlingPlayer Mobile – Sling Media )
4. Stream live tv/audio from your YouView Box to your phone/Ipad (like BBC iPlayer/Watch ITV/TV Catchup sites do)
5. Sync/download content from your YouView Box to your phone/iPad for offline viewing/listening (great for train/car/plane journeys where a reliable net connection isn’t possible).
6. Use your phone/iPad as a remote control when you are sitting in front of the box (like many Samsung TVs can now do using Internet@TV App)
It's going to be a great alternative to TiVo for people who don't want a monthly subscription to a pay TV provider. Lovefilm and Skype are believed to be the 2 apps available from launch. The box will be able to record 500 hours of TV content and 2 channels at the same time.
