Really hate that MPs can do that.

Re: UKIP get their first MP
This is the kind of thing that could potentially de-rail the conservatives election hopes.

He has taken the unprecedented and extremely honourable step of resigning his seat and forcing a by-election which he will contest under the UKIP banner.
A great move and hopefully an example which any defectors in the future will follow regardless of party.

Good stuff. I know the principle is you are electing a person rather than a party but I agree this should be the default for defecting MPs.

That's the principle though of course in many constituencies you could put a pile of steaming turds up for election and they'd win if they had the right colour rosette on them.
With that in mind good on the man, he knows he probably won't win the by-election but appears to have acted with a level of integrity pretty uncommon amongst politicians now.

I think he knows he is actually very likely to win the by-election. It's still a risk he didn't have to take and he would have a better chance of retaining the seat at the next election as a Tory but he is very likely to retain it for UKIP anyway.
He is the bookies favourite as the constituency is apparently prime UKIP land in terms of demographics, apparently the best one in the country for them, and the only reason he wasn't under threat from them is because he also enjoys a large body of personal support there as well (and presumable Farage has declined to push this seat due the possible deflection).
Unless the Tories do an especially good job of campaigning for the seat, something they've been poor at thus far, then UKIP will win it. Personally I would like to see the Tories appoint Boris as their candidate and he is probably chance they would have but I doubt he wants a seat that he could easily lose.
UKIP have gone from looking like a 50/50 shot for a seat in the next Parliament to being odds-on favourites. If the rumours of further deflections are correct, and a successful retention of the seat for Carswell would help that, then the Conservatives just can't win the next election. The math were already stacked against them already but the prospect of losing several sitting MPs to UKIP as well as a surge in UKIP support would give Miliband a comfortable working majority.

re: UKIP get their first elected MP
I believe the reason he called a by-election is partly due to his support for introducing a sensible system of recall. To simply defect would be grossly hypocritical and it seems he has some conscience/integrity

re: UKIP get their first elected MP
I suppose he really defected to gain an important position in the UKIP hierarchy? He will have to do it all over again in next years general election.
UK Independence Party... well if the Jocko's vote yes there wont be much left of the United Kingdom!

If Carswell does win this I would consider further defections likely. I imagine that for some of those with less testicular fortitude than Carswell the main thing holding them back is fear of losing their seat.
Massive PR coup for Farage also if UKIP win a by-election. Adds a ton of legitimacy.
