Even after switching everything off, then re-booting first the modem, letting it settle for at least 30 sec to a minute, then re-booting the lappy ?

Suggest doing the following. (and I appologise if I may seem patronising I don't know how much IT experience you have so no offence)

Firstly Turn off the computer & Modem.

Now:

1. Plug ethernet (LAN) cable into modem.
2. Boot modem and wait until lights are steady green.
3. Boot Laptop & Log in (if applicable).

Now check whether you have an IP Address.

If not follow suggestions below:

1. Click on Start and choose Run
2. Type
Code:
CMD
and press enter
3. In the box type
Code:
IPCONFIG /ALL
4. Look for your Ethernet Adapter and check its ip address. If it's still a private IP (eg 169.xx.xx.xx) then keep reading...
5. at the command prompt type
Code:
IPCONFIG /RELEASE *
6. Type
Code:
IPCONFIG /RENEW
Now try
Code:
IPCONFIG /ALL
once again and see if an ip address is there that isn't a private one.

There could well be a problem with your modem if this does not work. I am presuming that you aren't using a router too.

Re: Limited Or No Network Connection

Right..i think it must be my modem. When i was on the phone to tech support they were saying try it on a friends too see if it works..which i have done and it worked fine. i think it is my modem thats not talking to my network card! iv just done what haydnwalker's suggested and nothing. its still a private ip address.

Re: Limited Or No Network Connection

check your mac address, is it 00.00.00.00

if so, assuming windows os, try changing it for a valid one and then power cycling again.

go get a slax livecd and boot that to see if that works, and it will auto assign a new valid mac for 00.00.00.00 type ethernet cards ,just use that new mac inside windows network device drivers

hmm,did you use the same rj45 cable at your mates?

to check the modem, disconnect the cable feed into the modem and power cycle.

that should make the modem set itself and give out a 10.* ip
range.

if needed manually set your ethernet to the 10.0.0.2 ip and try pinging 10.0.0.1 that should be the modem if its not got the cable feed pluged in.

Re: Limited Or No Network Connection

Is your lappy set to AUTO DHCP???

Right click your network connection>properties>tcp/ip>properties and ensure your using AUTO DHCP and not a static ip.

Your lappy might have been using a router or static ip for someother provider(guessing)
