New Tv

I'm looking to replace my tv in my living room for a smart tv.

I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of any sites that review and recommend.

Thanks.

Re: New Tv

You'll also want to factor in a possible sound bar and defo a subwoofer unless you can rope in your stereo. The built in speakers in flat TVs are very reedy.

Re: New Tv

Alan, your TV is the same age as mine which works perfectly. I felt I couldn't justify a new one so bought a Sony smart Blu-Ray player for £50. So, I can play Blu-Ray's and have a smart TV and I saved loads of money.

Re: New Tv

Why do you want to replace it? That would be a good start before going out and buying soundbars, smart bluray players and whatever else has been suggested already

Re: New Tv

Even at FHD resolution a modern, direct-lit LED TV like the Samsung series 6 will knock spots off anything made 9 years ago by a very large margin.

Re: New Tv

As has been said I'd definitely recommend buying a TV for the picture first, and Smart TV functions second, but there are other reasons to do it.

I recently changed from a 2011 C7xx Series Samsung TV to a 2014 H6xx Series one. Both Full HD. Even though my old TV had a good picture, I have noticed a much better picture on the new TV.

I wasn't too worried about the Smart TV bits as I've got enough alternatives, but I managed to upgrade from a 40" TV to a 48" TV without increasing the overall size of the TV due to the reduced size of the casing around the screen itself. As I also moved from a CCFL lit TV to an LED lit TV then I'm expecting my running costs have come down.

Re: New Tv

That must have been a large bezel around your old TV if the screen is 8inches bigger but the overall size of the TV is the same, or am I missing something?

Re: New Tv

One disadvantage of taking away the front speaker grilles (pretty much every TV these days is just a screen and narrow bezel) - it really has not done the sound much good.

Going from an old Tevion - with front grilles, to a Samsung that didn't, the sound was clearly lacking - eventually got it kind of ok after some tinkering with tone / sound mode, but still not as good. The stand also does not lend itself to a nice arrangement with a sound bar.

They used to call TV sound "the poor relation" some time ago, but if anything, it's got worse in the super slim models of today.

That's a turism. Our new Sony Bravia smart LED TV has a cracking picture and very thin bezel but I had to add a 100W subwoofer and fiddle with the graphic equiliser to get the sound anything like the Philips Matchline CRT that it replaced. That had 4 speakers in the TV cabinet including a big subwoofer.

Luckily they do seem to getting a bit fatter again than they were. Samsung especially went full on with the Edge lit thing for a while, but with the move local dimming in the higher end TVs, they have had to increase the size again to include all the LEDs.

I suppose another factor is that more people do buy the soundbars and surround sound systems now for TVs. Not much point building in fantastic speakers when they'll just get disabled
