The name WishList is a trademark for TiVo.

I would have thought ( but do not know) that would could only be possible in the context of a PVR

If it was remotely good the owner wouldn't have set up a new company in order to break association with this STB.
The company and the STB were a joke!
The 3view was a FV PVR and it did actually do a good job of wishlists in that it could get you movies based on actor and it could record future seasons of a show. Unlike Tivo, it was unreliable as a PVR. Owners were lucky to get recordings of the shows they had planned to record let alone the stb working stuff out for itself!

"WishList" yes, but "wishlist" is a rather more commonplace term. Doubt that Tivo would bother with litigation over something so trivial. Given that the 3View isn't available anyway it would seem a moot point, interesting nonetheless.

The actual way TiVo works is patented too, not just the name WishList.

Vaguely reminiscent of Tivo recording stuff that you gave 3 thumbs down. Not my experience but there was a post with regard to that. I have to say that our Tivo has been fine from day one

That PVR is very likely to make a comeback. One of the owners has set up a new company and it is likely that this STB will return for its second generation.
The way STBs work has changed. There is nothing at all stoping community based STBs from providing these kind of functions. In theory Topfield users could add wishlists via 'Taps' which actually has nothing to do with Topfield themselves. Humax also stated that they would not support community based modifications to their STBs but also would not do anything to stop these modifications either.

To be fair mate they are two completely different offerings , VM have gone for a more advanced DVR were BSKYB have chose to keep things simple even in the latest Beta EPG.
People have said on here that Sky+ handles back to back recordings better however I'm not sure with TIVOs updates whether this is still the case.
Sky+HD allows the setting of A) A reminder or B) A single recording or series link from an advert for the show by pressing green.
The new beta EPG planner can now be filtered to find your recordings by Genre which makes finding your recordings easier especially if you've pages of recordings (not sure if this can be done in TIVO so apologies if it can)

That's good to know as Whishlists are of prime importance to me.
There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about that company ATM, but it does suggest that Whishlist functionality could be added to Sky/Freesat/Freeview/Youview boxes. Which surprises me as to why it hasn't been done so far. Maybe, because of Tivo's patents, it could only be a limited implementation? It would be good to know the facts. For me, the more boxes that offer Whishlists and more than 2 tuners, the better.

You can filter the EPG by Genre but you can't filter the list of recorded shows by Genre. The shows are in folders though, so if you have several episodes of a particular show, they are all in one place, which makes the list shorter anyway. You can also play all the shows in a folder, in order of recording, in one go, with the next episode playing automatically.

I guess the reason for this is that Tivo had virtually no visible presence in thr UK for years so no STB manufacturer was that interested in additional features.
Platforms do offer some additional features via apps but it is up to the user to update on the STB side, e.g. FV app offers recommendations based on shows you say you are interested in and Sky offer stuff like Never Miss and Sky showcase and AT. They will probably now move towards access from external devices meaning stuff likr Nevet Miss can be used by the user to directly access the STB via app and update.
There are some excellent STBs out there that are running advanced features via user modifications. A member on AVForum called Raydon has been developing modifications for the Humax Foxsat. That STB can now offer shared planner access, advanced multimedia streaming and archiving of SD and HD material for viewing on external devices.

It does rather beg the question, why should it be necessary (let alone legal) to hack a PVR so that it works as you would prefer? Everyone has different wants but it seems that there is no way to please all of the folk all of the time. I'm merely making an observation, not a criticism or otherwise.

STB's will be controlled by companion apps more and more over the coming years , TIVO in the US already has the excellent IPad app which allows access to my shows , setting recordings actor/director searches , social media plus much more. Sky are also developing a similar companion app allowing you to control your box , view your planner , I personally would rather do all these functions on a companion device as it allows you to continue watching the TV without having to bring menus up.

This is great, but for me, and I suspect many others, we want a PVR, with good functionality, that is manufacturer implemented. That way, we have someone to contact/complain to, if that functionality doesn't work properly.

Not sure I really am that keen to do these things. However I fully agree with the ideal of companion device,if only as a matter of choice. Or better still tell the "young uns" what I want & get them to help out the old fool. The great one spent hours setting up pieces of kit so I just have to press a button.
It works every time!!
