Free Hospital Parking in Wales
TEN YEARS after it was made policy, the last 3 hospitals that still charge will end parking charges by the end of the year.
I hope that includes the overspill spaces on public land in nearby parks that suddenly became chargeable several years ago.
The charges were brought in to pay for security in the car parks after many thefts and lots of damage. I wonder if this means no more security?

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
I live within a mile of my hospital so I walk.
But my mum can't, so i'd drive, then I'd only pay minimum as they have never charged any one for overstaying.

We have about 50 blue badge places in a disabled car park at our hospital as its a big hospital but even that is not enough as sometimes we have to drive around for a little while before a free space appears.

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
The problem with free parking is non-hospital users see it as a freebie, and people with real appointments can't get parked. Maybe not a big issue in Wales, but will be in some English cities.

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
It would be nice to have it in England too, the rates are a piss take, even blue badges have to pay. The 'trust' allegedly puts the money back into maintaining the car park Hah that's a freaking joke.
Oh and these 'super hospitals' we're all stuck with because they closed down all the local ones, they're all in the middle of freaking nowhere, so it's not like someone could park there and go shopping...
F'cking joke.

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
The UHW near us stops charging on June 5th. But if you stay over 4 hours, you have to get to a "terminal" before the 4 hours is up and input your vehicle details to extend for a further 4 hours.
If you don't you get a £70 fine through the mail from Parking Eye.
And a lot more of the parking slots are being designated STAFF ONLY.

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
The money does go back to the hospital, so if it wasn't this you'd have to pay some other way ie. Taxes (which would be more fair). Consequence of this government starving the NHS of money.

Labour would not have done more for tne NHS, actually, Mr K. They said it would be reckless to increase the NHS budget in 2010, remember that? Whereas the Conservatives did increase the budget - so much for the NHS being safe in Labour's hands.
And if Corbyn was in government now, there would be no money left for the NHS in any case, due to their complete ignorance of how the economy works.
Having now heard McDonnell confirm that he wants to abolish capitalism, this should strike fear into the whole population. Labour supporters risk sleepwalking into a nightmare if they vote in substantial numbers for this lot at the General Election.
There are very few people in this country who want to see capitalism abolished. The alternatives are communism or the barter system. I haven't yet heard of any other alternatives. I hope Labour get challenged hard on this in the run up to the next election, which may not be very far away now.

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
Our local hospital car parks work on number plate recognition. When you want to leave to go to a terminal, enter your reg and it tells you how much to pay. You pay and when you leave the gate opens if your reg has paid. Maybe enter your appointment details as well to link to times you should be at hospital. Visitors can be given codes to coincide with visits. Code could be bar-code or magstrip card.
So surely something can be arranged for staff (approved car reg) and hospital users to access free parking while others can be charged effectively to not let them want to use these car parks.

Re: Free Hospital Parking in Wales
Quite a lot of the hospitals are going to number plate recognition as our big local hospital has that as well now.
