You forget Sky and BT are bitter enemies in the marketplace and their main aim is to win customers from each other and if that means not being outbid for important sports rights and one is not going to see any one of them suddenly roll over and let the other one take important sports rights unless you think otherwise AB?.
That's fine if they want to drive each over a cliff, I just don't see that people will keep paying as we have already shown. It will just become uneconomic for both BT and Sky to pay more than they can recover. Have a look at this https://www.bloomberg.com/gadfly/art...its-grip-on-tv

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

The cost of football rights has I believe reached saturation point and more and more people are saying enough is enough and are either staying with paying for sky sports/bt sports because they get a discount like me,or like many of my friends and work colleagues get a dodgy box (not endorsing that route mods).
The trouble is sports rights in general still attract customers and sky and bt are in competition against each other and don`t want to loose out to each other. I don`t know what the answer is.

In the end, Sky and BT will have to accept that there is a limit to what even the most ardent sports fanatics are prepared to pay. Certainly, Sky seem to appreciate this and I think they will pitch their bids lower next time around.

Neither Sky nor BT want to lose their share of the audience for their sports channels, but that desire will be tempered by their ability to make a profit. if the number of subscribers diminishes as a result of the high costs charged, both parties will have to think long and hard about their strategy.

I do think that the number of deals being offered by Sky at present is indicative of their realisation that without them, the number of paying subscribers to Sky Sports will diminish substantially.

The bidding process next time around will be very interesting.

Any proof of that OB?.

No decision has been reported as far as I know, but it is obvious that this cannot go on, Den, as indicated in the link I posted on the previous page of this thread.

People haven't got bottomless pockets. One thing that could happen next time, and this is speculative, is that BT may seek to take advantage of any indication that Sky would pay less to put in a one-off high bid as a loss leader to grab majority sports rights from Sky.

That is not as daft as it seems. Sky are reported to have indicated already that they are not prepared to keep bidding higher for sports rights regardless of the consequences. The only question now is, have we reached that point yet? Let's see what happens...

The problem is neither sky nor bt want to loose the premier league rights and will bid whatever they think necessary to keep at least some of them. The danger for both of them is they both bid low and another provider comes in and scoops the lot!

True, but in the end, reality will determine what happens next.

l don't need too as the evidence of the last 5 years is clear enough evidence MM but here is ample proof that we are not in the last chance saloon as articulately stated by you and others as others are likely to come into the market to push up sports rights even more unless you think otherwise?.

Like Linear TV is having the last rites before it goes in its coffin in the museum for dinosaurs...
Your own example from The Independent, observed:

'But there are recent signs the UK market is slowing down, with viewing figures 12 per cent lower than last year, increasing the importance of overseas markets. Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said the latest rights deal was close to the limit of what broadcasters would pay.'

Your opinion appears to be based purely on past events, and you have been telling me over and over that my view of the future cannot be right because that is not happening now.

However, any successful businessman will tell you that no matter how successful you are, if you are not alert to signs of change and you do not adapt to them quickly, you could be caught out big time.

Sky are already investing more in drama in an effort to future proof themselves from a shift in viewing patterns away from sport.

I think that more people now are prepared to believe my vision of on demand viewing taking over and rendering our linear channels unviable than there were only a year ago, as evidence mounts of increasing numbers watching TV via non conventional methods.

But what are yours and others predictions based on? as there is utterly no proof in the financial figures of these companies that the golden goose that laid the egg has done a disappearing act as of yet.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Nobody has said that it as however you are looking at profits across the whole business.

With fewer people electing to take Sport and some of those that are receiving lengthy half price discounts where do you think the extra money comes from ?

Presumably higher prices for non Sports fans and customers of other products , with cheap entertainment alternatives can the likes of Sky and BT afford to increase base tv packs much further?

Whether they can increase them much further remains to be seen as l respect your views MM but we shall see what the future holds in the next few years as you usually are often right.
