My view has always been to get rid of him (since before last year).
I found his decisions puzzling, and man management seems to be poor (this article adds weight to that)

Bradford were flirting with relegation at the time of their league cup wins, great recovery to get to Div one.
Pity I won't be able to see 'The Beast' at Boundary Park next season though, he is bloody huge.

its not done but we're in good spirits to get 3pts. i don't really understand why Ashley has thrown 1m at the backroom staff

Ashley did it because newcastle get more money if they place higher (circa £6m available). So good business sense.
equally it gives him good PR, and might get the players trying harder (to help get the money for the backroom staff).
That does make it more interesting, and a bit harder for Arsenal
