Car Insurance
How much does a car's insurance group affect the cost of your insurance.
Which has the biggest bearing on insurance costs, is it age, no claims or car group.
My current car is Group 5 but the new one I'm looking at is Group 17.

good luck. I'm assuming that the car you're looking at is either prestige or high performance?

Re: Car Insurance
Just rang them up, she said it would increase from £400pa to £900pa. Big increase.
Anyway, does anyone know about buying ex demo models? What sort of discount off list would be normal with these?

No disrespect, but the Megane 225 is a bit of a "boy racer" car - do you want to buy one that people have been thrashing to see what it can do?

Depends on how much the discount is.

Re: Car Insurance
Or try the ones that I use - www.confused.com or www.aquote.co.uk. Confused found me a quote that was just over £200 less than the quote from the company I had my car insurance with (Direct Line).

Anything up to 30%. Depends which dealer you go to.

You should think ahead a bit more than that. The car could only be a couple of grand, but if it's only going to last a month before you have to start shelling out on it, what's the point in buying it in the first place? You want a boy racer car, I'd buy new if I were you.

Re: Car Insurance
for the love of god, please don't buy a french car!!! if you are looking for something around the 220bhp mark, try looking at the new Focus ST (222bhp from 2.5 Turbo volvo engine, one of the best engine makers about), mondeo ST220 (220bhp from 3.0 V6), Vectra GSI (212bhp from 3.2 V6) or, my personal favourite, the Leon Cupra R (225bhp from a 1.8 Turbo). remember, Seat is part of the VW Audi Group (as with lamborghini, VW, Skoda and others). All those I just listed will probably cost less if something goes wrong or needs replacing.

Don't know if I can afford it new.

Re: Car Insurance
fair enough. I suppose bad news travels faster than good, and I've only ever heard bad. I have driven a few french cars from Citroen, renault and peugeot and hated all of them. but that is purely my poersonal opinion.

Recently Confused.com has been poor in terms of the number of responses you get back. I've been told that www.moneysupermarket.com is worth a try.

Don't automatically assume that a group 17 car will cost more than a group 5.
Having used to work for Admiral I can tell you there are lots of factors involved. For instance a Ford Ka is usually around a group 4 but if there's been a spate of thefts of those cars in your area, the premium will rocket whereas if a BMW 325 (usually around a group 17) has a good and safe record in your location, you might get away with a reasonable amount.
