Tube services to go 24 hours

http://www.itv.com/news/london/story...s-than-a-year/

I always find it strange how local authorities find the money when, when something is about to happen.

Soon coming to Twickenham, we have the Rugby World Cup. And all of a sudden, roads are being worked on to improve them. And the area being 'smartened and spruced up

Now, we have the tube network, going to be running 24 hours.

Authorities, can soon find the money for this. But cannot find the money for anything else.

I have lived in the Twickenham area for the past 28 years, and everything asked for, the answer is 'where is the money coming from'

Twickenham is served by ONE railway station which is small compared to Wembley. When rugby is one, living in the area of the stadium is a nightmare.

And parking attendants cant be seen until the game is on.

re: Tube services to go 24 hours

It's the same story here in Cardiff. All around the Millenium Stadium is picked clean of rubbish, the roads repaired, and police are out in force. But go further away and street cleaning never seems to happen, roads are a disgrace and the police are invisible.

And they suddenly have a huge fireworks budget for almost any reason!

Re: Tube services to go 24 hours

It's only running 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Probably find the aim is to get everyone home after a night partying in London. There should be enough paying customers to make it worthwhile and it could boost the economy as more will go out if they know it's easier to get home.

Usually pay about £50 between 4 of us to get a taxi home from the centre of London though unless we are near one of the main train stations, then it's quicker and cheaper to get the train and a cab the other end.

Re: Tube services to go 24 hours

It's a great idea. It will also only be on Fridays and Saturdays and NOT all lines.

Will mean people can get home easier from nights out.

Arthur you again fail to realise, when big events like that happen the local areas will have planned ahead and set aside a budget and also they are probably being given money to get it done as they know there will be a lot of extra money coming to the area due to the event.

Re: Tube services to go 24 hours

Stephen, we in London know full well, that if they are planning it for Fridays and Saturday, and not on all lines.

We know that this will be increased. I live within a five minute walk of Twickenham Stadium, and l can assure you that the residents have been crying out for change in the area, due to the rugby. We has increased over the past years.

Seems strange to me that all of a sudden - they have decided to change everything, found the revenue to pay for these updates, just as the World Cup is near.

Years ago the residents have cried out for a new station at Twickenham, to be built on the grounds of an old hospital - next door to the stadium.
And with a tunnel from St Margarets, going straight to the ground - like Wembley.

Where they can serve 10000 supporters per hour, Twickenham only has four lines, that cannot cope with the 85.000 crowd. And l should know, as l covered it as a special constable.

The site was sold to Tesco's, and no tunnel was built

Re: Tube services to go 24 hours

Its not all of a sudden. It will have been well planned and thought out.

SAme happened in Glasgow just before the commonwealth games. in the 2-3 months before the start there was a lot of road resurfacing and places getting done up around the venues.

Its just what happens when there are large events.

Re: Tube services to go 24 hours

Welcome to the 21st century.

London is a 24hr city, so it should have a 24hr tube.

It's like my road. whenever the queen is passing through they send an army out to clean up and paint the lamposts again.

when she's not passing through you never see them. and they're skint all over again.

As Pierre says London is, or at least certainly should be, a 24 hour city.

Re: Tube services to go 24 hours

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland don't have tube services at all. In view of the reinvigorated faith in devolution and sharing wealth fairly, will the funding to create a 'normal', never mind 24/7, tube service (or other viable and effective inner-city transport system) be provided for the 'other' Capital cities of the UK?

Well, we know that isn't going to happen. But couldn't you Londoners just be happy with something you've already got instead of sucking up more funding so your lives are even cushier?

Erm, Glasgow has the 3rd oldest underground railway system in the world after London and Budapest. So not exactly what you posted.

Well, I did latterly focus on Capital cities in an attempt to clarify things for nitpickers who might miss the actual point being made. That point being that London is still the centre of the universe to some even though millions of other taxpayers live outside it.

Sorry to nit-pick!

As with LOTS of my posts I didn't read the whole post. (It is a flaw of mine that I seem to fall prey to a lot!)

Glasgow should be the capital of Scotland but isn't.

Would definitely agree that London isn't the centre of the Universe or even the UK.

Glasgow has the clockwork orange. The third oldest subway service in the world.

I use it a lot.
