Its a risky strategy, they could just drive customers away by using under hand tactics.

Underhand tactics "Really" no l don't think so as its no different to Sky driving its HD subscriptions drive.

Re: SKY F1 HD Channel, Any Chance?

Could it be because the feeds are mpeg4 and most older boxes aren't compatible?

Nah, too easy, there must be a conspiracy

Re: SKY F1 HD Channel, Any Chance?

all this mpeg4 malarky is rubbish, it is a codec at the end of the day and mpeg4 can be decoded and transported as mpeg 2 on the fly, there is no big mystery, just a big stick.

Re: SKY F1 HD Channel, Any Chance?

I'm not sure what benefit there would be to Sky in producing red button for Tivo before V+ when, realistically, Tivo is Virgin's one TV related edge over them. I'm far more inclined to believe Ben's suggestion that the Tivo red button was simply easier to do. Sky saying to their only real competition "have Sky f1, and whilst we're at it we'll prioritise red button for Tivo despite that being your premium product"? Can't see it.

Re: SKY F1 HD Channel, Any Chance?

VM would be paying for the software to be written so it is they that are in control of the process.

Mpeg2 as HD would take up more bandwidth on the transponders to make it unprofitable.. Also the decoding for such a bandwidth would be probably beyond the throughput of most of the chipsets/processors in the older boxes.

A Virgin Media spokesperson confirmed the launch plans, but said that they are reliant on Sky being able to provide the service to V, V+ and V+ HD set top boxes.

"As part of our roll-out of next-generation interactive services we've been working closely with Sky to deliver new Sky Sports F1 Red Button services to our TV customers," said the spokesperson.

"Starting this weekend, our TiVo Service customers will be first to enjoy the interactive extras that Sky has created for its inaugural season.

"Sky's F1 Red Button service won't initially be available on our V, V+ and V+ HD boxes, and we're sorry we haven't been able to provide this service from launch, but it will be available to all subscribers this summer."

I think VM should promote the LIGHT side, you don't realise how backward the liberate software is until you try TiVo!

As I quoted Cindy Rose in the past about getting the complete TV customer base over to TiVo, then VM increase the monthly subscription per STB, I am really struggling to see VM logic on this one

Because then neither middleware would have had the red button for the start of the season. Doing the Liberate boxes is a far bigger job. Not only is the software harder to write, but more significant is the amount of testing required. There are two TiVos which are almost identical. There are about 20 Liberate models using six different hardware architectures.
