Re: Sky Movies & Ofcom

Agreed so long as we don't have the same scenario as with premier league football were it actually ends up costing us more.

Re: Sky Movies & Ofcom

Is this a joke? Netflix has only been in the UK a short time so it doesn't take a genius to figure out its affect would have been minimal to this point.

Re: Sky Movies & Ofcom

If you think this is good news you're crazy. If Sky lose exclusive rights to all the movies then they can't be forced to sell Sky-Movies to VM and could well pull them.

It will end up consumers paying more for the same so instead of £16 a month for all the newest movies it will be £16 to Sky, then Netflix will increase its price if it has to spend out on movies, then Lovefilm will buy some.

Ok we all have access to Netflix,Lovefilm via our connected TV, Smart TV boxs(Apple tv,Roku etc) or EVENTUALLY via TiVo but we know the TiVo version will be the worst of the lot. But we will still all pay more in the long run.

How do you come up with the conclusion that we will all be paying more as a competitive market will usually ensures that competition will be stiff and packages l suspect will be priced accordingly and competitively.

Packages will be priced to compete with each other but you won't get the one size fits all for £16 a month you can currently get via Sky movies.

You will get some movies with Netflix, Some with Lovefilm, Some with Sky and you'll see other providers start bidding for movie rights. So I don't see how anyone will be able to get the kind of service Sky movies offers for the price we currently pay.

I will not subscribe to Netflix I had the trial and although the streaming quality is good it just is not broadcast quality so my choice will be Sky movies possibly with less content and a lower price and I will simply download any other movies I want.

You will not get everything we get now for £16 a month with any other provider, especially as if this goes through providers will probably be bidding for movie content packs like its done for the football.

Re: Sky Movies & Ofcom

Sky Movies says LoveFilm and Netflix have changed market dramatically.

Quote:
The UK pay-TV market for films has changed dramatically since Ofcom began its inquiry into BSkyB's dominance of the sector in 2010, a senior Sky Movies executive has said.

Simon Rexworthy, the Sky Movies controller of acquisitions and on demand, co-hosting a London event to publicise expansion and investment plans on Friday, noted that VOD operators such as LoveFilm and Netflix had changed the market and "deliberately set out to be rivals", seeing Sky as competition.

Also on Friday, Ofcom made a further submission to the Competition Commission warning it not to overestimate the importance of the challengers, or their access to first run VOD pay rights from the main US studios.

Sky Movies used the event to demonstrate its widening availability to any UK user, giving more details of plans for its new internet TV service. Now TV, which will this year, will provide instant access to a range of Sky content, including hundreds of Sky Movies.

The new service will be available to anyone in the UK with a broadband connection, and not dependent on a Sky TV subscription.

Ian Lewis, the director of Sky Movies, also said that the company would be making a substantial investment in five or six family-friendly films a year, including animation, the first launching in 2013.

BSkyB to face no action over TV film monopoly

Quote:
BSkyB is to face no action from regulators over its monopoly of UK pay-TV film rights, after the Competition Commission decided that video on demand rivals such as LoveFilm and Netflix provide a vibrant market for consumers.

The decision marks a U-turn by the competition regulator, which provisionally determined last August that BSkyB's contracts with the six major Hollywood studios – Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures and Universal Studios – were anti-competitive and needed to be weakened to allow rivals to flourish.

Being a Sky World customer I find Sky Movies excellent value for money. The ability to watch in HD , On Demand , on the go is also a nice feature.
