Sky HD and HD Ready tv - Getting sound?

I have a philips hd tv, it uses a dvi-i port for the hd signal and next to the dvi is what looks like a 3.5mm? port that says dvi audio in

I can connect my skyhd box to the dvi port with a hdmi>dvi convertor and get the picture but not sure what sort of cable i need for the sound.. as the hd box appears to be optical?

The cable I was sold is a digital optical cable with the square like connection and an add on to make it a 3.5mm? jack but it doesn't give sound..

What do I need to get so I can get the sound to go with my hd picture?

Cheers

Re: Sky HD and HD Ready tv - Getting sound?

Why on earth are you using a dvi connector? you just need an HDMI lead that's all.

I'm sure the op will thank you for that helpful comment

I was not aware that HD tv's ever came without HDMI sockets, I have a 37" HD monitor that does not come with one but that is because it's not a TV.

A 3.5mm jack on and optical cable will do nothing, this is because it's optical, it works by sending light through the cable, like fibre optics so putting a 3.5mm jack on the end would just stop the light source, you should just be able to use audio cables from the box to the tv.
What is the exact model of the tv? also have you tried reading the manual?

The comment was to you, if you actually read the post he tells you the tv uses a dvi socket. You can buy a scart lead that has phono outputs then get a phono to 3.5mm jack wire

The tv is a Philips 42PF7520D/10 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-42PF.../dp/B000AOEM4G)

It has no hdmi connection, just dvi-i and a bit next to it saying dvi audio in and it's a small round connection (no idea on types that's why i'm here)

Re: Sky HD and HD Ready tv - Getting sound?

It could be a 3.5mm headphone jack style connector

Try one of these don't use the yellow phono plug as that's for video.

That worked! Thanks mate. Will I be getting proper sound using a scart though as opposed to a hdmi cable directly to a hdmi port?

Now all I need is an adapter so I can plug 2 dvi cables into one dvi slot. As I have my sky hd box and my pc to both connect to the tv but only one dvi port. Anyone know exactly what I need?

Cheers

Re: Sky HD and HD Ready tv - Getting sound?

Only if you have got a 5.1 surround sound amp. Using just tv sound, no difference.

Re: Sky HD and HD Ready tv - Getting sound?

cool, thanks mate.. only other issue to solve now is how to hook my xbox 360 via hd to my tvs dvi connection to get hd sound and audio as obviously the xbox doesn't have a scart connection.

DVI is Video only. HDMI is Audio & Video
