Attention all G-mail users
ok I don't know if this is true or not or if it has been posted before, but I will post it anyway. This is from a post in another forum.

Then he said I was a dumbass for using gmail, and it was paid for by the RIAA to crack down on filesharing. I always did wonder why they would give you a free gig of space while other email services could only spare a megs. I thought he was being a bit paranoid at first, then I went back and read the terms of use, http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/terms_of_use.html, and I was like holy sh**! He could be right.
Proper Use. You agree that you are responsible for your own communications and for any consequences thereof. Your use of the Service is subject to your acceptance of and compliance with the Agreement, including the Gmail Program Policies ("Program Policies"), located at http://www.google.com/gmail/help/program_policies.html, or such other URL as Google may provide from time to time. You agree that you will use the Service in compliance with all applicable local, state, national, and international laws, rules and regulations, including any laws regarding the transmission of technical data exported from your country of residence. You shall not, shall not agree to, and shall not authorize or encourage any third party to: (i) use the Service to upload, transmit or otherwise distribute any content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, abusive, fraudulent, obscene, contains viruses, or is otherwise objectionable as reasonably determined by Google; (ii) upload, transmit or otherwise distribute content that infringes upon another party's intellectual property rights or other proprietary, contractual or fiduciary rights or obligations; (iii) prevent others from using the Service; (iv) use the Service for any fraudulent or inappropriate purpose; or (v) act in any way that violates the Program Policies, as may be revised from time to time. Violation of any of the foregoing may result in immediate termination of this Agreement, and may subject you to state and federal penalties and other legal consequences. Google reserves the right, but shall have no obligation, to investigate your use of the Service in order to determine whether a violation of the Agreement has occurred or to comply with any applicable law, regulation, legal process or governmental request.
Anyways, this basically says Google can monitor/investigate the use of their service and turn our a**es in. What are you guys' thoughts on this?

Re: Attention all G-mail users
Afaik, you'll see pretty much the same AUP for most free email services.

Maybe. Plus the data protection act said that companies cannot give out any information about yourself without your permission.

By using (or signing up to) the service you agree to their AUP, if their AUP states that they can give your info. to other parties (normally the police armed with a court order) then you've given your permission

As I said "IF" the AUP states it, however, Gmail's does say

So if people don't want Google monitoring usage, surely they shouldn't have agreed to their AUP?

Well BlueBottle give you 250mb space, so I don't think GMail is just trying to capture illegal file transfers.

I don't think the DPA covers it (thankfully) otherwise they wouldn't be busting internet based child pornography rings, I can't imagine any ISP with-holding customers details regardless of what the DPA entails.

Re: Attention all G-mail users
I do tire of constant GMail conspiracy theories.
The deal with GMail is stunningly simple: their spider software spiders your mails and they may, or may not, serve a semi-relevant text ad with the mail, down the side a bit like on Google search pages.
It's text only and it's based in theory on words you use in the mail.
It's not passed to the FBI, the US Government, or anyone else other than if an authorised body requests it as part of their investigations into some criminal act, and that part of it is NO different to ANY other email provider.
To some people, GMail's business model represents a gross invasion of privacy and they won't use it. For others, it's really no big deal. I fall into the latter category, and I take privacy very seriously.
If I was planning to bomb Russia or something similarly secret, I wouldn't use ANY email service to discuss it, never mind GMail.
People need to realise there is no one READING your GMail emails. They are simply spidered. People really do overestimate their own importance if they think the FBI is even remotely interested in their personal emails. Sheesh!
