Clegg's popularity drive
Desperate for an opportunity to make himself popular again, 'Mr In' has clearly decided that a leaf out of Francois Hollande's book is the best way to rebuild his tattered reputation, restore some political credibility to his party and get people voting LibDem again:

Well it's worked so well in France hasn't it...

Re: Clegg's popularity drive
Had to look twice at the topic title. Thought you wrote Clegg and popular in the same sentence
His reputation is in so many tatters I doubt it matters what he says any more.

His credibility is in the toilet and is beyond recovering only thing he can do to make any improvement is to quit. It is going to be a very longtime before the lib dems have a chance not only because of clegg but all the lib dems that are seen to have sold out values for a bit of power.

I think they did, apart from tuition fees. Stopping the communications bill and getting the tax free allowance raised to £10,000 were good policies IMO.

Nick Clegg? No, don't tell me, let me guess. Last of the summer wine? No, that was Norman Clegg. Britain's Got Talent? No, that was John Clegg. A horsefly? Nope, that's a Scots Clegg.
Oh, I give up, who is he?

My take on them is that when they were the 3rd party you could look at them and think, that looks a good idea. However now they have been around the top table for a few years, they have been exposed as a party with no plan except to get in the way of some good ideas and have completely lost touch with what the voters want.

No, no, NO!
You've just misunderstood their message...
I prescribe Clegg's new hypnotherapy course - it's titled "You will love the EU!" and is readily available in the fantasy fiction section of all good booksellers...

Re: Clegg's popularity drive
The vibe I got from them after the pasting they took in the European elections especially wasn't that they had lost touch with what voters want, more that they wanted to tell the voters what they want because we were all mistaken.
The arrogance I felt from some of their statements was astonishing.
That said they have had some achievements while in government but, unfortunately for them, the Tories have happily stolen credit for the popular stuff and palmed off the blame for the unpopular stuff.

Mr Clegg said unlike the Tories who have "ruled out asking the very wealthy to pay even just a bit more in tax to help the ongoing fiscal effort", his party will be "asking those with broadest shoulders to make some additional contributions" by extending new council tax bands on higher value properties.
|
What's wrong with this though? The council tax system is a farce and is a big reason reason loads of dodgy money ends up buying huge swathes of London and, increasingly, other places now, pricing out first time buyers.
The whole 'cash buyer' thing is a bit of a wash incidentally. Anyone who gets money from outside of the UK mortgage market is a cash buyer. With London property especially hurtling up in price it's easy for those with existing high value assets to borrow at virtually nothing and buy bits of London.

That is what most people took from their statements after. Cameron and some other tories also came out with some similar comments, insinuating they need to change our minds and perception rather than change their policies. It's just they didn't use it as an excuse for doing so bad like the Lib Dems.

I think they've done ok, reighned in the worst of the tory excesses and got a hell of a lot of their manifesto into place as well, I think I'll vote for them in 12 months.
