First question - have you powercycled the modem? You must turn off/on the modem whenever you change the attached device.

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL

You shouldn't have to. Should just be a case of connecting the modem to the router, restarting everything.

When you say your Ethernet light isn't lit up, is the CAT5 cable plugged in properly to the router and computer ?

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL

What LED's are lit on the modem & router?
Can you browser to the router admin page on your PC (192.168.1.1), and if so what does the status page show?

Is Port 1 the WAN port or a normal network port? If its a normal port, there is your problem. It needs to go into the WAN port.

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL

With the internet light not lit up, the only thing I can think of now, is a faulty lead or lead in the wrong port (done that before myself lol). Might be worth just double checking the right cables are going in the right holes

Modem > router (WAN)
Router > computer (LAN)

Not trying to imply anything, I just know i've done it before and it took me ages to figure out i'd done it wrong.

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL

ok i may be a little dumb here, but shouldnt the cable from modem-router and the cable from router-pc both be cat5e or cat6

please?

if they are different cables then that is my problem

i have tried a couple of different cables just in case

thanks in advance

---------- Post added at 10:59 ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 ----------

the WAN port is connected to the modem via a cat5e cable

the port 1 is 1 0f 4 ports connected to computer via a cat5e cable

The cable should not matter. There is obviously a configuration problem. Try a hard reset on the router and see if that works. Also try cloning the MAC of the modem into the router. And make sure you power cycle. All off, the modem first, router, then pc.
