If the house is empty and a warrant is obtained they won't wait until the occupier comes back home. The warrant empowers the Police to force entry.

There needs to be some evidence of criminality before a warrant is granted, there isn't just a stack of them sitting about waiting for a celebrity to move to the area so they can punt his door in.

To stop rumours for a start. The press etc would know fine well a search was ongoing thanks to neighbours and twitter. A Police press release gets the facts straight before the Internet gossip squads can start.

I can understand searching premises where there is an allegation of theft or something involving a physical object eg drugs, but what physical evidence after all this time could there be about this specific allegation? They seem to just look on the off chance there is evidence of unconnected offences.

Re: Operation Yewtree
what bugs me - and I wrote a letter to the home secretary to which I got no reply
even if people are as guilty as hell - there should be no trial by media
it's not right

Well off the top of my head thee could be photographs, diaries etc. all of which could give corroboration to the allegations.

Re: Operation Yewtree
Since Cliff Richard has homes abroad and spends a lot of his time there, surely if these allegations are true and photos do exist he would have had the sense not to leave them in his UK residence?

Re: Operation Yewtree
Yes, I thought that. Wonder if his properties abroad will also be searched?

Probably. Mind you if people thought things through Gary Glitter wouldn't have taken a hard drive chock full of child pornography into PC World for them to fix.

Re: Operation Yewtree
Well I know from industry insiders that there were a lot of rumours circulating in the eighties. There's no smoke without fire as they say.

There is also no guilt without a charge and a trial.

Re: Operation Yewtree
Two points to make.
Police can enter properties, if owners are not there - l believe its called a section 18. But needs a senior officers / mags order.
This news is again somthing brought by someone who cannot be named. I cannot beleive it. In fact l would go as far to say - its ********.
