Strange how our usual suspect has gone rather quiet today as the imaginary delusion of thinking lower TV sports prices were coming is just that.

I don't think you were ever likely to get so many extra matches for free, Den!

So you agree in that prices are likely to rise then??.

Assuming that Sky and BT will have to pay more to screen the extra matches, then it is pretty obvious that those increases will be passed on. However, you still seem to be confused by what I have said about the impact of competition.

What I have said is that when the big global players such as Amazon, Netflix, Discovery, etc move in, we are likely to see more imaginative models which could lower prices to the consumer despite higher payments being made for the rights. I never said this would happen with the existing players, Sky and BT. We will have to wait until potential bidders with bigger pockets get stuck in. This might happen with the next bidding round or perhaps the one after, but it will happen. Prices to the consumer are so high at the moment because Sky and BT keep everything to themselves and charge as much as they can, and other operators are shut out of as much as they can get away with. These are the practices more associated with monopolies.

If there was more on-selling or distribution of rights to other platforms to show some of these matches, the cost to the winning bidders will come down. I cannot foretell when this will come about, but I am sure it will sooner rather than later.

Old Boy you do talk some complete rubbish , I suppose Amazon and Netflix will sell it at a loss or minimal profit. Of course they will.

Give us a few ideas of how you think they'll sell it or bundle it with their existing offerings.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I wouldn't be surprised if the streaming platforms get into it via 3pm kick offs at first. The current ban on them being broadcast in the UK will eventually cave to the ridiculous amounts of money that will be offered.

Whatever happens it will unlikely be one provider offering everything (at whatever price) anytime soon. More likely we'll end up having to shell out for Sky + BT + Amazon/whoever.

I gave you an example in my last post. Of course they won't make a loss! They would find alternative means of extracting more income from other broadcasters and offer additional cheaper packages to attract more subscribers.

The whole idea of adding things to Prime is attracting people to buying at Amazon , how would that work if other broadcasters had the content Amazon had just paid boat loads of money for.

Perhaps you need to read this OB as this tells you the sports rights market is going one way worldwide.

Because Amazon would have all the matches it pays for. It could sell on selected matches to terrestrial or other broadcasters; provide snippets to YouTube and other platforms; set up Amazon pay channels on all pay tv platforms (not just Sky, Virgin and BT) including on Amazon Prime; employ techniques to enable discounts and promotions on these services by way of sales inducements; provide better access by way of pay per view events on all platforms; etc.

There are plenty of opportunities to make money out of having these sports rights in a way that Sky and BT do not and that is what would enable them to pay more for the rights while decreasing costs to the consumer.

Again, that's what happens with monopolies and monopoly practices.

It's just different. Nobody would have imagined ten years ago that we would have the likes of Netflix streaming TV series and films to our TV screens, would they?

We have become used to Sky's way of doing things, but as usual, disrupters come in and muck it all up for the established players.
