Re: The threat of streaming services

HMV starting now.

Doesn't look as if it's a subscription service though, so not of interest to me

Consumers in the U.K. and Ireland will be able to access an online copy of DVDs they buy from Tesco, the U.K.’s largest retailer.

The service from Blinkbox goes live on Friday with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. Anyone who buys a DVD of the movie from Tesco—either in store or via the website—will get free instant access to a digital copy to be watched on devices including computers, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Xbox, iPad and PlayStation.

Re: The threat of streaming services

Hmmm, that Tesco thing sounds a bit suspect. After all, if you buy a Triple Play set you're getting much the same thing with the advantage that you'll always have the different format copies and aren't reliant on a service which might not exist in a couple of years.

Streaming services like Netflix and IceFilms are all well and good but you can't rely upon them, in my opinion. Always better to have hard copies of everything you really like and I know I'm not the only one who feels like that.

Walmart's Vudu plans big int'l expansion: Streaming service to compete with Netflix, local players

Quote:
Walmart-owned streaming video service Vudu has plans for an aggressive international expansion, according to sources, which could spell trouble for Netflix and other competitors. The U.S. retail behemoth is expected to make Mexico the first overseas home for Vudu in June ahead of a bigger deployment across Latin America that could encompass over 30 countries. Vudu will also enter parts of Europe and Asia later in the year. A Walmart spokeswoman declined to address Vudu's international strategy. "We're always looking at ways to expand our offerings but we have nothing new to share at this time," she said. Vudu is the latest entrant into the increasingly competitive international market for broadband-delivered TV and movies. Earlier this year, Netflix kicked off its own expansion into 45 countries that largely mirror Vudu's plan of attack, with a high concentration of activity in Latin America and targeted European forays including United Kingdom and Ireland. But while Netflix strives to build its brand outside the U.S., Vudu will enter the international arena with a competitive edge: cross-promotion through its stores. While the retailer may be best known for its massive footprint stateside, the company owns over 5,000 stores across 26 countries

Good. The more the merrier :p

Since getting a roku I'm already planning on investing in a second one and ditching the two Tivos.. OTOH I'm one of those people that's generally slightly ahead of the curve so can see that's not going to be a mainstream position for a while. In 12-24 months though? VM and Sky could have a problem.

Until Netflix etc. start providing access to current TV shows and first run VOD for films, I think Sky and VM will still get the customers. Don't get me wrong, I'd like for this to happen, but it may tale a while and to do this, the £6 per month Netflix price would almost surely have to rise, which Netflix don't want to happen. It's a market in flux ATM, so it's going to be interesting. I think that in the UK, Sky Now could be game changer, depending on the subscription options available and pricing.

Re: The threat of streaming services

Until streaming services get first run rights they will only ever be a companion to free view, or for people who can't bear not to have everything. Until streaming services have significant market share they won't be able to get significant first run rights.

Sky NOW TV will be operated as a separate brand, targeting those who would like access to some of Sky’s content but are turned-off by the ongoing monthly subscription costs. “It will be available on a wide range of devices and offer instant access to a range of high quality Sky content, with no install and no contract” CEO Jeremy Darroch said this morning. ”Starting with movies, it will soon expand to offer sport and entertainment as well. And customers will be able to pay monthly or rent a movie on a simple, pay as you go basis.”
