News Corp sells NDS Group to Cisco Systems for $5 Billion
News Corp had sold NDS Group (provider of TV software to Sky, Foxtel and DirectTV) to Cisco Systems (who make STBs via its Scientific Atlanta Division for companies like Virgin Media) for $5 Billion
This means that Cisco not only becomes a big supplyer of Digital TV Technology, but a supplier of both Virgin Media and Sky
I am gussing that BSkyB will sell Amstrad (who make STBs) to Cisco as well

Might mean that Virgin could swap to NDS rather than NAGRA at some point then if they felt the need to do so,

If VM adopt NDS, can they still use Tivo?

Smart move for News Corp considering things are moving away from traditional set top boxes.

Ben means the smart card security , BSKYB use NDS Videoguard for smart card security and NDS Videoguard Connect for mobile security ie smartphone/tablet , NDS STB middleware.

Why on earth would they do that , it's far cheaper in the long run to have one make of STB's.

Turns out NDS provide the tech for Sky Go, could this be used for a Sky Go style product from VM?

Yep - did you see a mass migration of set tops to migrate to Nagra 3? Most of the intelligence is on the smartcard.
