MP's do their bit to share the pain...

Small beer yes but it's hardly in the spirit of sharing the pain of austerity is it.

MPs spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers' cash on new iPads, iPhones and laptops just months before the General Election, it was revealed today.

Some 60 MPs ordered £70,000 worth of expensive kit shortly before an expenses ban came into force stopping any claims being made six months before the election, the Parliamentary expenses watchdog admitted today.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority today revealed they wrote to the MPs seeking assurances they were using the equipment exclusively for their work in Parliament.

One of the MPs involved was Labour former Cabinet minister Peter Hain, who claimed nearly £2,000 for a new iPad, iPhone and PC.

There is no suggestion that he broke any rules and Mr Hain has reportedly said the new kit was needed to replace broken equipment.

Broken equipment? Hmmm....

Anyway I'm totally convinced that those, like Hain, whose services are no longer required in Parliament will hand back the items they bought without hesitation so that others who do have the public's trust may use them.

I dare say there was a fair amount of 'broken equipment' amongst Labour ranks after the results became clear too...
