The article sounds a little scaremongery to me.

Apple has applied for a patent for methods to differentiate between authorised and unauthorised users, and enable unauthorised users to be locked out. One of the things which can be looked for is whether the device has been Jailbroken, but it's not a case of "Apple are going to remotely disable Jailbroken iPhones!" as some on the 'net seem to think.

Calmer article: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/20...-ios-users.ars

Jailbreaking your iPhone or other device is 100% legal now in the US, no more grey area. There's no way that Apple could get away with locking people out of their own legally owned & legally Jailbroken phones.

Doesn't sound that different in matters of fact to me:

If the various analyses detect someone who is not authorized to use the device, it could set off a number of automated features designed to protect the device's data, suss out the offending party, and alert the device owner. Sensitive data could be backed up to a remote server and the device could be wiped. The device could automatically snap pictures of the unauthorized user and record the GPS coordinates of the device, as well as log keystrokes, phone calls, or other activity. That information could be sent along with an alert to any useful service, such as e-mail, voicemail, Twitter, Facebook, or a "cloud service" like MobileMe.

My bold

It's aimed at detecting unauthorised users, & then restricting their use. It's not aimed at detecting Jailbreakers. It can see if the device has been Jailbroken, but that could not be sole grounds for "unauthorised use", given its newfound legality. Apple cannot lock you out of your own phone just because you have done something completely legal to it.

One article: "Apple Patents Remotely Disabling Jailbroken Phones"

Another: "Apple may be looking to lock out unauthorized iOS users"

Rather different.

Re: The iPhone thread

A word from a user of the iPhone 4 on Three...

Got rid of my iPhone 3G (well, it's still under the coffee table, but will go to O2 Recycle...) and managed to get one from a Three Store - eventually - about three weeks ago.

For £30 a month I'm getting unlimited texts, 1GB of data, more minutes than I know and unlimited 3-to-3 mins. The iPhone 4 16GB cost me £99 outright on a 24-month contract.

I've been really impressed by Three's network. Unlike O2, no more dodgy capacity and all connectivity dropping in and out in Lakeside, Bluewater etc.

At worst, it drops onto Orange's 2G network which is rock solid - or at least it's a good enough back-up (there was a big outage a few days ago - not that I noticed).

When they merge their networks with T-Mobile, presumably Three customers will get the best of 2G from T-Mobile and Orange and Three already site-share with T-Mobile for 3G sites - so a pretty good network to be on.

They don't offer any Wi-Fi bundled, but compared to O2 it's like being on WiFi more than 3G.

The only downside is their customer service. All out in India, all very much driven by hopeless scripts, all very difficult. Avoid if at all possible!

Why O2 recycle? I would offer more than they do.

They offered me £125 for my old 3G (with a crack around the Dock port) that was nearly two years old.
